Savignac-Les-Églises offers several different aspects to explore: the history of its churches, the banks of the Isle and the protected landscape of Causse de l’Isle. There are also dry-stone huts, an archaeological industrial site and signposted outdoor activities. When planning your visit, you can focus on architectural history, nature or activities by the water; not all these topics call for the same kind of outing.

Churches and village history

At Chapelle Saint-Christophe, the structure and artwork can be distinguished by period. Its rectangular choir belongs to a church dating from the late 11th century, whose nave has disappeared. Above the portal is a stone bas-relief from the 13th century. It depicts Christ between the Virgin Mary and Saint John. The chapel also has a bell gable built in the 14th century. Several historical layers can therefore be seen in this building. The former cemetery surrounding the chapel was relocated in 1904 and turned into an ornamental park.

Église Saint-Martin marks a different period: its foundations date from the 11th century, while the church was rebuilt during the Wars of Religion around 1570. The local heritage also includes several dry-stone huts that can be seen in Savignac-les-Églises. The village mill and wool mill now form an archaeological industrial site. The range thus extends from religious architecture to dry-stone structures and the industrial past.

Causse de l’Isle: nature and activities

Causse de l’Isle covers 410 hectares of protected natural areas, with several areas designated as Espace Naturel Sensible (sensitive natural areas). The area is home to rare ocellated lizards and a particularly rich dry-stone heritage. Protected status, wildlife and stone-building traditions are distinct facets of this landscape. So visitors interested in nature and heritage will find more here than a single viewpoint or sporting activity to focus on.

The Causse has signposted Nordic walking and mountain biking trails, as well as Land Art activities. These offer different ways to experience the landscape: exercise on marked trails and an artistic activity. This distinction can help when choosing an outing, as each activity appeals to different interests. The Boucle de la Nature is separate: it is an easy, 5.5 km circular hiking trail starting from Savignac-les-Églises.

The banks of the Isle and fishing

The banks of the Isle in Savignac-les-Églises are landscaped, shaded and inviting. A fishing platform accessible to people with disabilities is located at Plaine du Gué. Check the platform’s current condition before visiting. Plaine du Gué is also the site of the « Famille » family fishing area, on the Isle, which is classified as a second-category fishing water in Savignac-les-Églises. Fishing regulations and seasons may vary, so check the rules in force beforehand.

The river offers two different ways to enjoy it: the landscaped banks for spending time by the water, and the specific fishing facilities at Plaine du Gué. Together with the architectural history and trails on the Causse, these provide a range of different focuses for your stay. A short hike, a visit centred on the churches and local history, or an outing involving fishing are each different ways to get to know Savignac-Les-Églises.
