Saint-Pierre-de-Côle offers several distinct points of interest for a stay: the architectural history of Château de Bruzac, religious buildings and the Côle, with a walking route and a designated fishing area. The château’s construction phases span several centuries; at 9.4 kilometres, the Boucle de Bruzac provides a concrete framework for planning a hike. If you would like to combine culture with outdoor activities, you can choose your focus based on the buildings, points of interest along the river or your interest in fishing. You should also take the dates of seasonal visits and the festival into account.

Château de Bruzac and the religious buildings

Château de Bruzac consists of two châteaux standing side by side on a wooded rocky outcrop. Its main construction phases date from the 12th, 15th and 16th centuries. Its architectural history thus spans several centuries and cannot be reduced to a single period.

The Église Saint-Pierre-ès-Liens dates from the 11th century and has been protected by listing since 15 November 1926. The Chapelle des Ladres de Bruzac in Saint-Pierre-de-Côle is also protected by listing, since 24 June 1948. The construction period and protection date refer to different points in time: the 11th century indicates the church’s origins, while the later dates refer to its listing status.

Guided tours of the ruins of Château de Bruzac are scheduled for July and August. Check the dates before your trip.

Festival de la Côle

The 2023 municipal bulletin describes the Festival de la Côle as taking place annually on 14 and 15 October, in the church and the village hall of Saint-Pierre-de-Côle. The programme overview includes conferences, activities and a medieval performance. If you would like to plan your trip around the festival, check the current dates and programme in advance. This will help you keep the timing of the event as described in mind without treating the historical programme description as a current one.

Hiking and fishing on the Côle

The Boucle de Bruzac starts at the town hall square and is a 9.4-kilometre hike. It follows the Côle and passes a distinctive stone arch with a spring that is a source of the Côle. The route therefore offers both a clear distance for planning a hike and specific landscape features along the way.

The Côle is also a named point of reference for fishing. In Saint-Jean-de-Côle, Saint-Pierre-de-Côle and La Chapelle-Faucher, it is designated as a first-category fishing area. The fish listed for this stretch include trout, minnows, barbel, gudgeon and chub; the methods mentioned are natural bait, spinning and fly fishing. Check local regulations and fishing seasons before you go fishing. The two references to the Côle address different planning questions: for the Boucle, distance and waypoints matter; for fishing, species, method and the applicable conditions are key.
