Saint-Michel-de-Montaigne is closely associated with the life and work of Michel de Montaigne: he was born at the Château de Montaigne and wrote the “Essais” there. There are several specific points of interest to help you choose your stay: the château’s history, the Tour de la Librairie and the Église Saint-Michel; there is also a route with views over the Lidoire Valley and activities at the Domaine de Perreau. When looking for a hotel, you can plan your trip around whether cultural history, or also the landscape and activities, should be the main focus.

Montaigne’s life and the château’s architectural history

The Château de Montaigne is classified as a historic monument. After several fires, it was completely rebuilt in 1884. This architectural history adds a later turning point to its literary associations. The Tour de la Librairie is the only surviving part of the former Château de Montaigne. The chapel where Montaigne had his children baptised is on the tower’s ground floor. The contrast between the rebuilt château and the surviving part of the former building makes the different chapters in the site’s history easier to understand; the chapel adds a specific biographical connection.

Église Saint-Michel: architectural history and remembrance

The Église Saint-Michel offers another architectural and biographical perspective. It was built in the 12th century on Romanesque foundations; its west portal shows stylistic influence from the Saintonge. Its architectural history is also connected to Montaigne’s death: in 1592, his widow, Françoise de La Chassagne, had his heart buried in the chapel of the Église Saint-Michel. His body was taken to Bordeaux, to the church of the Feuillants. The historical account thus distinguishes between the place where his heart was buried and the destination to which his body was taken. Architecture and personal history offer two different perspectives on the church.

Valley views and a garden route

If you would like to include a landscape perspective alongside the historic buildings, consider the “Chez Montaigne...” route. It includes a viewpoint overlooking the Lidoire Valley and the gardens around the Château de Montaigne. The viewpoint and gardens offer a different focus from the biographical details of the chapels or the church’s Romanesque foundations: here, the emphasis is on views across the valley and the gardens. The route thus adds two specific elements to the cultural history, without being equivalent to a visit to the historic buildings.

Activities at the Domaine de Perreau

The Escape Game Domaine de Perreau offers a different kind of activity and takes place at a wine estate. The Domaine de Perreau also offers visits to its wine cellar and vineyards during opening hours, followed by a wine tasting. This gives you two different options: an escape game, or a visit followed by a tasting. While the château, tower and church focus primarily on literary, architectural and biographical themes, these activities turn the focus to games and winemaking.

Plan your visit with a reservation

The Château du XIXe siècle has a specific condition for visiting: visits are possible only as part of a guided tour and with an advance reservation. Bear both requirements in mind when planning, and check the current reservation requirements in advance. The guided tour and advance reservation go together, so a spontaneous visit is not a suitable basis for planning a visit to this château.
