A chapel dating from 1435 is the only surviving part of the medieval remains of the Château de Longua; the Château was completely rebuilt on the same site in 1818. This places tangible older building fabric alongside a later reconstruction. Other highlights include the Church of Saint-Médard, the landscaped park of the Château de Bassy, the Landes des Gavardies and signposted circular cycling routes in the Landais forest. These offer different focal points for your stay: architectural history, landscape, nature and cycling.

Château and church: architectural history across different periods

At the Château de Longua, the reconstruction and the surviving medieval trace are clearly distinct. The Château was completely rebuilt in 1818 on the site of the medieval remains. The only part of those remains to survive was the chapel, built in 1435. This makes it possible to place the complete reconstruction and the older surviving structure in their respective historical periods.

The Church of Saint-Médard can also be viewed in terms of two construction periods: it was built in the 12th century, while its square bell tower dates from the 17th century. Whereas the Château has a complete reconstruction alongside a surviving part, the church and its tower date from different centuries. Visitors interested in architectural history will therefore find more than a single historical point of reference.

Parkland and rivers

The landscaped park of the Château de Bassy covers 7 ha and is open to visitors free of charge. As the site is associated with a care centre, check access locally. The Petite Beauronne runs through the park, which also features several rustic bridges. The watercourse and bridges add specific landscape features to the park’s stated area.

Another river connection is the Isle, which borders Saint-Médard-De-Mussidan for around 10 km. The two figures describe different things: 7 ha is the area of the park, while around 10 km is the length over which the Isle borders the town. This distinguishes the compact landscaped park from the broader geographical relationship with the river.

Natural area and circular cycling routes

The Landes des Gavardies in Saint-Médard-De-Mussidan is a natural area managed by the Conservatoire d’espaces naturels de Nouvelle-Aquitaine. During area monitoring reported in November 2025, the Marsh Fritillary (Coenonympha oedippus), a species associated with wetlands, was recorded there. This finding links the site to a specific wetland species and adds an ecological dimension to its architectural and landscape features.

Cyclists can follow signposted circular routes named “Entre Mussidan et Villamblard” in the Landais forest. Check whether GPX files are available before setting off; route infrastructure may change. Cycling is therefore a distinct planning option alongside the historic buildings and landscape features.

Sapeur Pompier exhibition

The Sapeur Pompier exhibition presents historic firefighter uniforms, helmets, medals and other preserved objects. It focuses on tangible evidence of firefighting history—a different approach to cultural history from the construction periods of the Château and the church. Free guided tours are offered throughout the year, but only by prior reservation. Confirm availability before your visit.
