Saint-Méard-de-Gurçon can be explored through its historic church, timber market hall and a route offering views of the town. There are also wine visits and a golf course. When planning your days, you can choose between different focuses: architectural history, exercise and wine.
Church and timber market hall
The Église Saint-Méard was listed as a historic monument by decree on 25 February 1974. Its western portal dates from the 16th century. The church therefore offers both a specific architectural detail and an acknowledged status as a monument.
The timber market hall is also part of the town’s history: it was built in 1837 and moved beside the church in 1847. The two dates mark its construction and later relocation. The church and small hall are also mentioned together in the description of the Boucle de Saint Méard de Gurson.
A route with views of the town
The Boucle de Saint Méard de Gurson is an 8.9-kilometre walking route starting in Saint-Méard-de-Gurçon. It passes the church, the small timber market hall and the green square with its washhouse and fountain. So if you choose this route, you will also encounter several of the town’s features mentioned above; its description is not limited to its length.
The loop can also be used for mountain biking and horse riding. Hiking, mountain biking and horse riding are each rated easy. This means you can choose between three activities on the same named route and plan according to your preferred way of getting around.
Golf and wine
Golf de Montravel offers a 9-hole course on natural terrain in Saint-Méard-de-Gurçon. It was founded in 2009. Golf is therefore a different option from the loop: here, the focus is on the 9-hole course, whereas the route is described by its length, its starting point in town and the local sights along the way.
Château Laulerie welcomes visitors to an 18th-century Périgord farmhouse to discover wines from the Montravel appellation. The château produces and sells wines from several appellations, including Bergerac, Montravel, Lalande de Pomerol, Puisseguin-Saint-Émilion, Pécharmant and Crémant de Bordeaux.
Château Le Raz offers both self-guided and guided visits, each by prior appointment. If you plan a visit, arrange your appointment in advance. This keeps the two wine experiences distinct: at Laulerie, the farmhouse and Montravel wines are the main focus; at Le Raz, booking in advance is part of planning the visit.
Plan your journey
For road directions: the junction of the D32 and D708 is in Saint-Méard-de-Gurçon. The D708 connects the north of the Dordogne department with the Garonne Valley. Since spring 2001, the town has been less than ten kilometres from an access road to the A89. As road conditions can change, check the current route and access before setting off.
Your options offer different points of interest: the monument and timber market hall provide a glimpse into architectural history, the loop combines a specific distance with views of the town, and golf offers a distinct activity. Wine enthusiasts can also visit Laulerie or, by prior appointment, Le Raz.
