Saint-Georges-De-Montclard lies in the heart of the Montclard Forest. For planning, an individual tour and two other routes are available as distinct options: the Circuit Cœur de village includes the Chapelle Sainte-Thérèse; the Boucle de Rabelais and the Chemin des Lébéroux differ in route format and length. Local history, religious sites and nature themes offer several distinct points of interest.

Tour and routes

The Circuit Cœur de village can be explored independently and without a guide all year round. It includes the Chapelle Sainte-Thérèse. A discovery brochure for the tour is available from the Office de tourisme de Mussidan-Villamblard. Guided village tours by Graine des Sens are different: they are offered seasonally to individuals and year-round to groups. Before travelling, check the tour arrangements, brochure availability, and seasonal schedules and group arrangements.

The Boucle de Rabelais is an 8-kilometre walking trail connecting the centre of Montclard with the hamlet of Saint-Georges. The Chemin des Lébéroux is an easy, 7-kilometre circular route from Saint-Georges-De-Montclard for walking and mountain biking. Its route description leads from the village hall car park past the château to the Place des Colonnes. The nature themes also differ: signs along the Boucle explain the importance of local flora; the Chemin is designated as a nature route relating to fauna and flora. At 7 rather than 8 kilometres, the Chemin is the shorter loop, while the Boucle connects the village centre and the hamlet. Check the Chemin’s waymarkers and trail conditions before setting out. As a circular route, the Chemin returns to its starting point.

Historic buildings

The Château de Monclar was built in the 11th century on a 45-metre-high artificial mound. A tall rectangular tower is all that remains. The château is privately owned by a company; ownership can change independently of a monument’s historic value. At the Manoir de la Beaureille, a square corner turret, known as the Échauguette, stands at the southeast corner of the building. Its façades and roofs have been partially listed as historic monuments since 29 December 1978. The hall of Montclard was rebuilt in the 18th century.

The church in the hamlet of Saint-Georges

The church in the hamlet of Saint-Georges dates from the 11th century and was built on an older place of worship. The church’s construction date and the site’s even older use are two distinct historical periods. Inside the church is an area dedicated to Saint Rita, who is regarded as the patron saint of hopeless cases. Many devotees of the saint visit the church. Alongside its early building history, devotion to Saint Rita is therefore part of this site’s religious character.
