Prats-de-Carlux combines a landscape of steep hills and limestone with distinctive church architecture and farm experiences. Outings focus on the GR6 long-distance hiking trail and circular routes; cultural traces range from Saint-Sylvestre Church to a Palaeolithic site. Farms add to the picture with tours, direct sales and a ferme auberge. When planning, it is worth distinguishing between the different routes and visiting arrangements.
Landscape and Village Character
The municipality is very hilly and consists mainly of chalk limestone. Land use also reflects its rural character: 59 percent is agricultural land and 41 percent is woodland. The Enéa Valley contains a landscape area recognised as picturesque, with natural landscapes, typical settlements and traditional houses among its defining features. The entire landscape area covers 1,446 hectares, of which 455 hectares lie in Prats-de-Carlux—about one third of the municipal area. Thus, the landscape description brings together natural areas and traditional architecture, while the municipality's share should not be confused with the total area of the landscape region.
Church, Archaeological Site and Local Heritage
At Saint-Sylvestre Church, a 15th-century bell gable rises above a 18th-century portal porch. This combination is considered the only known example of its kind among the churches of PĂ©rigord. The interplay between these two architectural elements makes the church a distinctive landmark in Prats-de-Carlux.
Another layer of history can be found at Pech de Bourre, where Palaeolithic remains and a site from that period are known. The site has been documented since 1900; in 1922, the prehistorian Denis Peyrony excavated there. The well and washhouse at Vialard add to local history as restored elements of the area's minor heritage.
Hiking and Château du Sirey
The GR6 long-distance hiking trail crosses part of the municipality. A shorter circular route with a stated distance is the 9.5-kilometre Boucle des Hameaux de Prats, which starts in Prats-de-Carlux. Check route details before setting out. Another hike, the Boucle des Gautheries, leads to Château du Sirey. The estate is privately owned and not open to the public, but its restored grounds and architecture can still be admired. The route therefore leads to the château, not into the private estate.
For mountain biking, there is another distinct option: the circular BOUCLE VTT 20 – Carlux / Simeyrols, rated difficult, starts in Carlux, is 20.5 kilometres long and offers views of Saint-Sylvestre de Prats-de-Carlux Church. The routes described therefore differ in activity, distance, starting point and—in the case of the mountain-bike route—explicitly stated difficulty. Check route conditions before setting off.
Farm Visits, Local Produce and Accommodation
At SCEA Les Oies du PĂ©rigord Noir, farm tours are available by appointment. Individual visits are free; groups are also welcomed by arrangement. The farm sells artisan-made preserves and regional products directly, including whole or semi-cooked foie gras, terrines with orange or PĂ©rigord-style terrines, rillettes, confits, charcuterie, duck breast and wines. If you are planning a visit, arrange an appointment in advance and ask about product availability.
La Garrigue Haute is a working family farm that raises ducks and geese and has a ferme auberge, sells fresh products and preserves, and offers seven non-smoking rooms. A visit can include a meal featuring typical dishes made exclusively with local products. Visitors are also introduced to recipes and cooking techniques from PĂ©rigord cuisine. This makes the farm a practical option when planning an overnight stay; ask about room availability and the details of the visit offering before travelling.
