Petit-Bersac lies in a loop of the Dronne, on the site of a Gallo-Roman settlement. Its riverside location and early settlement history offer two perspectives on the area: the landscape by the water and its historical connections. These include an ancient settlement, historic river crossings, Romanesque architecture and significant building remains from the 15th and 16th centuries. Nature and sporting activities, blacksmithing, and a farm visit with a seasonal tasting add to these cultural highlights.

The Dronne and historic routes

The historic Diagonale d’Aquitaine crossed the Dronne in the vicinity of Petit-Bersac using several fords. One was upstream near Chaboin, and another downstream near Vigéraud. The river is therefore not only part of the area’s geographical setting, but is also associated with historic crossings. These locations place the crossings in different directions along the Dronne.

Another connection with the area’s routes is the Chemin H. Barker. It runs along the right bank of the Dronne through the Périgord, within the territory of Petit-Bersac. Two different relationships with the river can therefore be seen side by side: the Diagonale d’Aquitaine is associated with historic fords, while the Chemin H. Barker is defined by its route along the right bank. Those interested in the history of routes will find both crossings and a riverside route as specific topics to explore.

Church, archaeology and castle remains

The Church of Saint-Saturnin in Petit-Bersac is Romanesque and was extensively altered in the 19th century. It has a nave with three bays and a square bell tower. Its Romanesque origins and later alterations are both part of its architectural history; its architecture cannot therefore be reduced to just one of these two periods.

The Musée Gallo-Romain presents the history of the archaeological site at Cidène. The Château du Mas de Montet preserves significant remains from the 15th and 16th centuries. These cultural and historical highlights are quite distinct: Cidène focuses on the history of an archaeological site, the church on architectural history, and the château on surviving remains from two centuries. Those interested in history can thus distinguish between the different topics of archaeology and architecture.

Circular route, games and blacksmithing

The Boucle de Petit-Bersac is a 13.9 km circular route starting in Petit-Bersac. It is designated for mountain biking, historical themes, and nature, including fauna and flora. Its classification therefore covers sporting use as well as historical and nature-related themes. Its length and circular format give the route a clear framework, while its designated themes indicate its focus.

At Site de Montmalan, you can play pétanque, volleyball and table tennis. This differs from the circular route: here the focus is on individual games, while the route offers a circuit with designated nature and history themes. La Forge de Petit Bersac offers another perspective on local craftsmanship. Using traditional techniques, it works with wrought iron, stainless steel and copper, and offers introductory courses in blacksmithing, knife-making and welding. The local activities thus range from exercise and games to craftwork and introductions to various techniques.

Seasonal produce and cultivation

Visitors to the Fraiserie-Rigaud farm can sample seasonal produce directly at the farm. Visits are available year-round by appointment, so arranging a time is part of planning a farm visit. In addition to grapevines, Fraiserie Rigaud grows strawberries in soilless conditions under a glass greenhouse. The tasting and cultivation offer different insights into the agricultural side of Petit-Bersac: one focuses on seasonal produce during a visit, while the other covers grapevines and the distinctive way the strawberries are grown.
