Montferrand-du-Périgord is a medieval village above the Couze Valley, known for its prehistoric sites. For a trip focused on culture, this brings two scales into focus: the village’s history and the prehistoric sites for which the Couze Valley is known. In the village itself, the main features are a castle complex, a Romanesque church, a market hall, and historic houses. The horseback rides on offer and the Boucle de St-Christophe also provide specific starting points for planning, without replacing the cultural focus.

Historic Buildings in the Village

A 16th-century market hall stands beside the village church and is supported by stone pillars. Old houses from the 16th and 17th centuries are also part of the village scene, along with windows featuring stone mullions. Compared with the château, the scale shifts from fortifications to the market hall, homes, and window details. This contrast helps show that the architectural history is not confined to a single castle: market and residential buildings are also part of Montferrand-du-Périgord’s historic character.

Château de Montferrand: Layout and Defences

The keep and defensive walls of the Château de Montferrand date from the 12th century. The complex consisted of two rings of fortifications separated by a moat, with a square keep dominating the site. A keep is a castle’s main tower. Taken together, the two rings, the separating moat, and the dominant tower make the layout of the fortifications easy to understand. The château as a whole is protected as a historic monument. This protection covers buildings, remains, land, and the fortified enclosure; the heritage listing was updated in 2013.

Chapelle Saint-Christophe and Its Wall Paintings

Chapelle Saint-Christophe is a Romanesque church dating from the late 11th or early 12th century; it was altered in the 13th and 14th centuries. To understand the chronology, it is worth distinguishing between the building’s history and its painted decoration: the walls of the nave and choir are covered with 14th- and 15th-century wall paintings. The imagery includes a Pantocrator surrounded by the symbols of the four Evangelists, as well as the Annunciation, Saint Christopher, Hell, and the Last Supper. Pantocrator refers to Christ as ruler of the universe; the other motifs range from a biblical scene to depictions of saints and the afterlife. Together, they offer a tangible introduction to the chapel’s religious imagery, while the church itself dates back several centuries earlier.
