Montagrier combines local history with views over the Dronne Valley and a variety of outdoor activities. At the Maison de la Dronne, the waterwheel and turbine are still visible; it is housed in a former grain mill dating from the 12th century, which was converted into a power station in 1907. The grounds of the Maison de la Dronne are open year-round, free of charge. Visitor arrangements may change, so check the current conditions before your visit.

Village Views and Hiking

The centre of Montagrier overlooks the Dronne Valley. A walk through the lanes leads to the “La Terrasse” viewpoint, linking a stroll through the village with a named destination. If you would like to include a hiking loop in your plans, the Boucle de Montagrier offers another option, described in more detail.

The loop starts in Montagrier, is 7.4 kilometres long and is rated easy. It is estimated to take about 2 hours and 15 minutes. This gives you an approximate timeframe for the hike; local conditions may change. The two options differ mainly in format: a walk through the lanes to the viewpoint, or a hiking loop with a stated distance and duration.

Traces of History

At the southern entrance to the village stands the Porte Wiridel, a surviving remnant of the fortifications. It was built as part of the defensive walls erected in the 14th century. The Église Sainte Madeleine was a priory dependent on Brantôme. Its features include a three-lobed apse, a dome over the crossing of the transept and a Neo-Gothic bell tower. The apse describes the shape of the church’s eastern end; the crossing is where the nave and transept intersect.

The Chapelle Saint-Sicaire offers a different perspective: it is a 19th-century reconstruction on the site of a priory that belonged to Brantôme Abbey. Two reused sculptures are set into its façade. Together with the former priory and the architectural features of the Église Sainte Madeleine, it offers several ways to explore Montagrier’s religious buildings, without suggesting that the two chapels share the same building history.

Routes and Outdoor Activities

The Centre Sports Nature Montagrier is a starting point for mountain biking, hiking, cycle touring and canoeing routes. It lists 22 mountain-bike trails, ranging from beginner to advanced level. This range applies to the mountain-bike trails; the other types of route offer additional options for planning. The Centre offers individual guidance and equipment rental year-round. Trails and service information may change, so check the current offerings before your visit.

If you are weighing up the activities, the Boucle de Montagrier offers a hike with a stated distance and approximate duration. By contrast, the Centre focuses on several types of routes, including cycling and canoeing. Your choice may therefore depend on whether you have a single circular hike in mind or want to consider a range of different activities.

Boat Trip and Summer Evening

“Découvre la Dronne en barque!” offers a guided motorboat trip on the Dronne in Montagrier. The trip is seasonal and requires a reservation; confirm the current operating dates in advance. This makes it a separate, organised activity to plan, rather than something to group with the walking and cycling routes described above.

The Monta'Grillades Musicales de Montagrier is a culinary, craft and music market. It takes place on Friday evenings in July and August, from 7 p.m. Check the specific dates for your travel year before planning your stay around a particular Friday. This way, you can consider the seasonal market dates separately from the year-round village and cultural attractions when choosing your travel dates.
