Set on a small hill, Monplaisant overlooks the valleys of the Raunel and the Nauze. It is also home to a Romanesque church, a memorial and other designated heritage sites. A trail dedicated to birds and biodiversity also passes through the commune. These different highlights can help you choose where to stay: landscape, architectural history, remembrance or textile crafts.

Landscape and character

The hilltop setting is Monplaisant’s defining landscape feature. From here, you can look out over the valleys of the Raunel and the Nauze. If you want to consider the area’s topography as well as its culture when choosing a place to stay, this gives you a concrete way to get a sense of the town. Landscape and heritage offer different perspectives on Monplaisant, without limiting the commune to a single theme.

Church and remembrance

The Église Saint-Jean-Baptiste was built in the 12th century and is a rural Romanesque church in the Périgord noir. Both its date of construction and its architectural classification are informative: together, they link a specific historical period with a clearly defined architectural style. For those interested in heritage, it is a precise starting point for exploring the town’s earlier history.

The Fongauffier Memorial marks a different period in history. It commemorates the tragedies of 4 March, 24 June and 9 August 1944. These three dates give the memorial a clearly defined historical context. Alongside the church, whose origins date back to the 12th century, the memorial turns attention to events from 1944. In this way, architectural history and remembrance of the more recent past stand alongside each other as distinct cultural themes.

Monplaisant’s municipal heritage also includes the Maison forte de Bosredon. Together with the church, it broadens the picture of the town’s designated architectural heritage. The two sites differ in how they are described: the church is specifically identified by its date of construction and Romanesque style, while the Maison forte is chiefly noted for its status as part of the municipal heritage.

Textile crafts and biodiversity

The Filature de Belvès is a museum devoted to textile crafts. The Moulin du Cros was converted into the Filature de Belvès. Information panels, immersive videos and hands-on wool workshops offer different ways to explore the subject: you can learn from the information, experience the content through video and work with wool in the workshops. This focus is distinct from Monplaisant’s architectural and historical themes.

The Chemin des Oiseaux et de la Biodiversité runs through Monplaisant and has around 20 information panels. It is designed for walkers, families and school groups. Unlike the Filature, whose activities focus on textile crafts and wool, the trail combines walking with information about birds and biodiversity. The approximate number of panels gives a sense of the trail’s educational nature without reducing its content to a single attraction.

Choose the focus of your stay

For your planning, the themes above can be distinguished by their character: the Église Saint-Jean-Baptiste and the Maison forte de Bosredon represent architectural heritage; the memorial commemorates the tragedies of 1944. The Filature combines textile crafts with information, videos and workshops, while the Chemin des Oiseaux et de la Biodiversité explores nature. You can consider which themes you would like to shape your stay, rather than treating the attractions as interchangeable visits.
