Four tree-lined squares define the centre of Mialet, and its architectural heritage can be explored on foot. The Retenue de Miallet and the trail around the reservoir add a natural setting and opportunities for outdoor activity. This gives visitors several ways to spend their time: strolling between the squares and historic buildings, birdwatching or taking a longer walk by the water. The hiking routes mentioned also provide a practical guide to planning your day.

Natural surroundings and birdwatching

Mialet lies in the southeastern part of the Parc Naturel Régional Périgord-Limousin. Since 1998, the Retenue de Miallet has been classified as an Espace naturel sensible (ENS). Both resident and migratory waterbirds can regularly be seen at this reservoir, which also has an ornithological observatory for birdwatching. This makes it possible to combine time by the water with observing birdlife.

On foot through the village centre

The four tree-lined squares give the village centre its layout and make it easy to find your way on a stroll between the historic buildings. One distinctive detail is the HĂ´tel Barby, which has a carved 15th-century door from the former Chapelle Saint Jean. The reference to the former chapel connects the visible doorway with the history of another building, without requiring an extensive tour.

The Église Notre-Dame du Mont-Carmel is also a place to visit. Visitors can use a brochure to explore its interior. Together with the squares and the Hôtel Barby, it offers a cultural focus alongside the trails and nature around Mialet.

Hiking and waterside trails

At the Barrage de Miallet, a paved trail about eight kilometres long runs around the reservoir and can be used on foot or by bicycle. The Boucle de l’Étang de Miallet is described as an easy eight-kilometre circular walk with an average duration of about two and a half hours. These details offer different planning guidance: the route around the reservoir is specified for walking or cycling, while the Boucle also has an average duration. Check the route details for the Boucle before setting out.

Another hiking option is the La Coquille–Miallet stage, which is part of the Grande Boucle du PNR. It is described as a stage, whereas the Boucle de l’Étang is a circular walk. You can also walk freely along many sections of the eastern bank of the Haute Vallée de la Dronne. These details cover different ways of getting around: a circular walk, a paved trail, a stage on the route network and stretches of riverbank to walk along.

Planning your stay

The average duration of the Boucle provides a useful time guide; the paved trail is also suitable for cycling.
