La Roque-Gageac combines a protected cultural landscape with historic sights, panoramic views and a range of excursion options. The village centre lies between the wooded cliff face and the Dordogne; the former château is built into the cliff. This distinctive setting makes a good starting point for discovering culture and landscape together.

The fort, village history and views

The troglodytic fort is an old medieval fortified complex. Its richly illustrated exhibition covers the history of the fortress and the village, as well as the notable figures who shaped them. If you are planning to visit the exhibition on a particular day, check the information in advance. The views are also part of the fort’s character: from here, the panorama extends 180 degrees across the meanders of the Dordogne.

Another view across the landscape opens up from the forecourt of the Church of Saint-Donat. The church was built in 1330; its forecourt offers sweeping views over the Dordogne Valley. The fort and the church thus connect two different perspectives with the history of the village: one looking out over the river bends, the other offering a broad view across the valley.

A garden and excursions offering different perspectives

The Bambousaie offers a different experience. The botanical garden covers about five hectares, of which 3.5 hectares are open to visitors. Shady paths wind among numerous bamboo species and other exotic plants. If you would like to plan a garden visit in addition to seeing the historic sites, you will find a different subject and setting here.

The Gabarres of the Dordogne are traditional flat-bottomed boats that were used to transport goods until the arrival of the railway. The one-hour Gabarre excursions offer views of La Roque-Gageac and the surrounding châteaux. During the trip, the history of the villages and certain notable buildings, as well as geological features, are explained; commentary may vary by operator. Check the excursions before your trip if you would like to plan this boat ride specifically.

Hot-air balloon rides at sunrise or sunset offer views of the Dordogne Valley and its châteaux. Whether a ride goes ahead depends on the weather and the operator’s availability; here too, it is advisable to check before making plans. Canoe and kayak trips can be sporty or leisurely, depending on your pace, and stops for picnics and swimming are possible. River conditions and operator practices may vary.

Plage des Pendoilles in La Roque-Gageac is a free, unsupervised river beach. Check the current local safety guidance before visiting.

Practical information and finding a hotel

There are large parking areas in the village centre. The tourist information office at the entrance to the village provides information on regional sights, guided tours and seasonal activities. It also focuses on walking and getting around the Périgord Noir in all its forms. If you would like to include other regional themes in your plans, you can ask there for relevant guidance.

Gabarre excursions, hot-air balloon rides and water activities offer different perspectives on your stay. You can tailor your accommodation search to the experiences you would like to make time for.
