Fossemagne can be explored through three very different connections: the Manoire Valley and state forest, places by the water, and the literary story of Jacquou le Croquant. The village is in a hilly, green region. For your planning, the type of experience is especially relevant: the swimming season has specific dates, while water sports are included with a stay at a particular campsite. There are also two routes, each understood through its own point of reference.

Valley and State Forest

Fossemagne lies in the Manoire Valley. The Forêt domaniale de Barade is a managed state forest, and Fossemagne is one of the municipalities that forms part of its area. The management plan for 2008–2022 provided for an area of 458 hectares. The valley and forest offer different ways to orient yourself in the landscape: the Manoire Valley locates Fossemagne, while the planned forest area conveys the scale of the state forest. The hilly, green region adds to this landscape setting.

Church and Literary Connection

The Église Saint-Astier, built in the 12th century, is part of the local culture. A second cultural connection is Eugène Le Roy’s novel “Jacquou le Croquant”: Lina and Jacquou get married in the church in Fossemagne. The Route des Canons connects this literary story with Fossemagne as the wedding location. The two references offer different cultural perspectives: the construction date of the Église Saint-Astier and the wedding scene in the novel. You can therefore explore the visit both through the history of a church building and through the place’s role in the story.

Water and Seasonal Planning

The Base de loisirs du Manoire covers 12 hectares and includes a 6-hectare pond. This means that the pond accounts for half of the total area and is a defining feature of the site. At the Plan d’eau de Fossemagne, the 2026 swimming season ran from June 29 to August 31. If you are planning a stay in a later summer, check that year’s dates.

As of August 17, 2026, Camping du Manoire in Fossemagne had a 9-hectare site with a private beach. As of that date, stand-up paddleboarding and pedal boating were included with a stay. These services are available only to guests staying at this campsite.

Two Routes, Two Points of Reference

The short circular route “Boucle autour de Fossemagne” starts at the Étang de Fossemagne. The Route des Canons, in turn, links Fossemagne to the story of Jacquou and Lina. The two routes therefore differ in the feature that makes choosing between them easier: the starting point at the Étang is specified for the short loop, while the literary connection is central to the Route des Canons. You can plan around either a waterside location or the novel’s plot, without treating the two paths as one combined route.
