Étouars brings together several themes that offer different perspectives on the village: its local forge history, a historic church, an orchard with old apple varieties, and an easy walking route. If you would like to include culture and exercise in your travel plans, you can set aside time for the Boucle d’Etouars; it is listed as taking around two hours. The village square, Espace “Fer et Forges” and orchard each have their own distinctive features.

Forge History in the Village

The forge in Étouars produced cast iron and naval guns for the Rochefort Arsenal. The village square features an actual 18th-century naval gun and a reconstruction of a working blast furnace. The gun is linked to the historical production for the arsenal; the blast furnace illustrates another aspect of ironworking.

Espace “Fer et Forges” is an information, resource and activities centre devoted to the forges of Périgord-Limousin-Angoumois. Its permanent exhibition focuses on metallurgy and the history of forges and foundries. This broadens the perspective beyond the individual forge in Étouars to encompass a wider regional forging tradition. Exhibition content may be updated, and visitor arrangements may also vary. Check the visiting options for your chosen date in advance.

Church and Boucle d’Etouars

The Church of Saint-Saturnin d’Étouars is dedicated to Saint Saturnin. It probably already existed in the Romanesque period; its first recorded mention dates from the 16th century. These details distinguish its presumed early origins from its later first mention. The 16th century therefore does not necessarily indicate when the church was built, but rather when it was first mentioned; its possible Romanesque origins date further back.

The Boucle d’Etouars starts in Étouars, is 6.6 kilometres long and is rated easy; the stated walking time is around two hours. The route description leads past the cemetery and then continues along an unpaved path beneath trees. This gives you a concrete impression of the route as well as its distance and duration. Trail conditions and signposting may change; check them before setting out.

Orchard and Seasonal Programme

The Étouars orchard is part of the Conservatoire végétal régional d’Aquitaine network. Covering just under one hectare, it contains more than 30 apple varieties: a clearly defined area is home to a diverse collection. The orchard discovery day, organised in October, includes activities such as identification workshops, tastings and talks following a guided tour. The programme goes beyond the tour, bringing together different ways of exploring the subject of orchards. Check the specific dates if you would like to plan your trip around this event. The route and the orchard offer different points of interest: trees along the way, apple varieties in the garden.
