In Champeaux-Et-La-Chapelle-Pommier, churches, medieval defensive architecture and a forest walk in the Périgord Vert offer distinct points of interest. If you want to combine architectural history with time outdoors, you can organise your choices according to your interests: single-nave churches and their architectural details, towers of different shapes, or a 13.5-kilometre circular walk. This makes it possible to explore the area through specific building periods and a clearly identified route.

Romanesque churches with distinctive details

The Église de Champeaux is a single-nave Romanesque church. Its bell tower rests on a round dome. The floor plan and the tower structure offer two specific features by which to describe the building. On 27 September 1948, the church was listed as a historic monument.

The Église Saint-Fiacre offers a different perspective. Its Romanesque building dates from the second half of the 12th century. Above the apse is a defensive chamber, probably built during the Hundred Years’ War. This dating remains probable. On 16 December 2008, the church in its entirety was listed as a historic monument. At Champeaux, the focus is on the bell tower atop the round dome; at Saint-Fiacre, the building’s period and the defensive chamber above the apse add further points of interest.

Towers, rocks and architectural history

At the Château des Bernardières, two types of tower and their dates can be compared: a square keep from the 12th century and a round tower from the 13th century. The difference lies both in their shape and in when they were built. On 6 October 2016, the château in its entirety was listed as a historic monument.

The rocks of Pérignac place defensive history in a different context. They contain significant cluzeaux: natural cavities adapted for defensive purposes. The term here therefore does not simply refer to a rock formation, but to cavities used for defence. Together with the towers, the cluzeaux illustrate different forms of defence.

The Château de Puycheny, built in the 15th century, is also part of the local hiking context. In chronological terms, the building periods mentioned here range from the 12th to the 15th century. The churches, towers, defensive chamber and cluzeaux can be distinguished by their form, function and date, rather than being viewed merely as a general historical backdrop.

A 13.5 km circular walk in the Périgord Vert

The Boucle de Champeaux-et-La-Chapelle-Pommier is a 13.5 km circular walk. It runs through the forest in the Périgord Vert and complements the architectural history with a specific outdoor activity. The route length is a useful guide for planning your day; check the route details before setting out.

There are therefore two different ways to explore the area: the buildings invite you to compare individual forms and periods, while the Boucle offers a named circular route through the forest. If you would like to consider both, you can treat the walk as a separate theme alongside the churches and historic buildings, without assuming a set order.
