Biron can be explored through several themes: the Château as a historic site, the Romanesque details of the Église Notre-Dame-de-Bourg, a public artwork, a circular walking trail and winegrowing. The Château and church offer different architectural perspectives; the Domaine de la Tuque links winegrowing with the landscape. This lets you assess Biron based on which of these interests matters most for your trip.

Château and Romanesque Church

The Château de Biron is listed as a historic monument and was the seat of one of the four baronies of Périgord. Its buildings were constructed and altered between the Middle Ages and the 18th century. Its building history therefore spans several centuries rather than a single period of construction. If you are interested in how historic buildings developed, you will find a timeline here that stretches from the Middle Ages to the early modern period.

The Église Notre-Dame-de-Bourg makes its own mark with its Romanesque features. It has a Romanesque portal and a choir with a hemispherical vault. The capitals are another striking detail: they are decorated with leaves, figures and animals. The portal, choir and capitals draw attention to different elements of the architecture. In contrast to the Château’s long history of construction and alteration, the church foregrounds specific Romanesque forms and ornamentation.

A Work of Art from 1994

The Monument aux vivants was created in 1994 as part of a public commission awarded to German artist Jochen Gerz. It is designed as an obelisk made of yellow Dordogne stone and fitted with enamel plates. This work of art from the late 20th century adds to the village’s older architectural themes. Comparing it with the Château makes the difference in age clear: the Château’s buildings were constructed and altered over centuries, while a specific year is given for the monument. Its design is also clearly defined—an obelisk, stone and enamel plates shape its description.

A Circular Walk and an Announced Puzzle Trail

The Boucle du Château is a 13.0 km circular trail. Its length and circular route give you a concrete basis for deciding how much space a hike should take in your day’s plans. The Tèrra-Aventura circular trail, announced for 2026, is different: it is intended to lead visitors on a historical, playful route through the village to the foot of the Château de Biron. The concept includes smartphone-based puzzles and clues about the Poï’z character “Zétoulu”. Check the current availability of this announced trail before your trip.

Winegrowing and Landscape at the Domaine de la Tuque

The Domaine de la Tuque is in Biron, on sunny slopes in the south of Périgord, amid a protected natural landscape and on a promontory opposite the Château de Biron. Landscape and winegrowing come together here, without requiring a specific route between the sites. The Domaine is the only vineyard in the Monpazier area. Old grape varieties native to this terroir are being replanted there, and the vineyard is farmed organically. This combination makes the vineyard a subject in its own right for anyone who wants to include winegrowing alongside architectural history when choosing a destination.

The Domaine de la Tuque is open to visitors. During a visit, you can discover the wines, as well as the local fauna and flora. Find out in advance when visits are possible. This lets you make a visit here a focus of your plans in its own right, without equating it with the hike or the architecture.

Consider Biron as a Place to Stay

If you are considering Biron as a place to stay overnight, start by choosing according to your interests: architectural history and church architecture, the 13.0 km circular walk, or the wine, fauna and flora at the Domaine each offer a different focus. Then search for hotels in Biron and check the Domaine’s visiting hours and the announced Tèrra-Aventura trail’s current availability against your travel dates.
