Discover Besse from two perspectives: by taking a walk through the countryside or exploring its church and château history. Along the way, you’ll find shady woods, limestone outcrops, clear streams and dry-stone huts; in Besse, the Église Saint-Martin and the Château de Besse turn the spotlight on different eras. You can tailor your stay to suit your interests, whether you prefer to be out and about or focus on architectural history.

Hiking: a family walk and trails through the countryside

The family walk starts in the village centre, is about 7.6 kilometres long and takes approximately two hours and 30 minutes. You can do it on foot, on horseback or by mountain bike. The estimated duration can help you plan your time; suitability may vary depending on seasonal conditions. Check the trail conditions before setting out.

The route passes through shady woods, by limestone outcrops and clusters of dry-stone huts, and along clear streams. These huts include Les Abris de la Jeanilles. They were once used to shelter tools and workers, who often worked far from where they lived. The huts are fragile and should not be climbed.

Marked connecting trails from Besse lead to other circular routes in the area. These connections can help you find your way if you want to include several routes in your plans. Check the trail markers on site before setting off.

Church and château: architectural history in Besse

The Église Saint-Martin is an 11th-century Romanesque church. Its features include a sculpted Romanesque portal and 16th-century wall paintings. It has been classified as a historic monument since 31 October 1912. The church’s architectural and artistic features give it a distinct focus alongside the countryside walk.

Guided tours of the Église Saint-Martin are offered by the Office de Tourisme du Pays du Châtaignier in Villefranche-du-Périgord. If you plan to take a tour, confirm the visiting arrangements before your trip.

The Château de Besse was built at the beginning of the 16th century by the lords of Besse, after the Hundred Years’ War. It is arranged around a square courtyard. By decree of 22 February 2012, the château, its Pédiluve and the associated grounds were all listed as historic monuments. The courtyard offers a tangible architectural feature, while the building’s date and protected status place its history in context.

The village’s medieval history adds another dimension to this picture of Besse: in the Middle Ages, it was initially under the protection of an 11th-century Benedictine priory. The church and priory point to an earlier historical context, while the château, built at the beginning of the 16th century, marks a later period. The church itself combines Romanesque features with wall paintings from a later century.
