Discover Wittelsheim through its industrial history and landscaped grounds. The Musée de la Mine et de la Potasse explores potash mining in Alsace, while the Jardins du monde offer a different focus, with themed garden areas. There are also two circular walks and the Route de la Potasse. They differ in length, route, and mode of transport—a useful starting point when planning your time here around your own interests.

Mining History at the Museum and the Carreau

The Musée de la Mine et de la Potasse is located in the former changing room of the Carreau Joseph-Else. It presents the history of potash mining in Alsace. The mineralogical collection comprises more than 5,000 samples of evaporite rock, some of which are dated to 500 million years old. The surface buildings of the Carreau minier Joseph-Else date from 1928 to 1930. Wittelsheim thus brings together the regional history of mining, geological samples, and historic buildings.

Five Garden Areas at the Jardins du monde

The Jardins du monde is a 2.2-hectare, multigenerational park open to everyone. Its themed sequence includes Italian, Japanese, French, Andalusian, and English gardens. In the landscaped area, an arboretum complements the gardens, with trees and shrubs from America, Europe, and Asia. The grounds thus combine a clearly structured series of garden themes with a dedicated area for woody plants from three continents.

Two Circular Routes of Different Lengths and Layouts

The 16-kilometer Circuit découverte can be completed on foot or by bicycle and passes the Salle des Fêtes Grassegert, a historic monument. A second circular route is 8 kilometers long and runs through the Wittelsheim Forest and the Rossalmend settlement. It is half the length of the Circuit découverte; the two routes therefore differ both in distance and in the landmarks and landscapes they pass.

Plan to Travel the Route de la Potasse by Vehicle

The Route de la Potasse is an 18-kilometer circular route that covers four municipalities. It starts at the Musée de la Mine et de la Potasse on Avenue Josephe Else in Wittelsheim. At the Carreau Joseph-Else, the route takes in a complete complex comprising two shafts and headframes, a winding engine, and adjoining buildings. You can travel the route independently; the route map can be downloaded via the Cirkwi app. A vehicle is required to complete it. The Route de la Potasse is two kilometers longer than the Circuit découverte. While you can complete the Circuit on foot or by bicycle, you will need a vehicle to travel the Route de la Potasse.
