Wintzenheim can be discovered in many different ways: from a castle with sweeping views to historic buildings, forest trails and a large garden. When planning your visit, it is worth considering the attractions by theme and the time they require. Alongside sightseeing and exhibitions, there are also shorter walks, circular routes and longer trails to choose from.

Forest Trails and Walks in the Vallon d’Aspach

The Vallon d’Aspach is located near La Forge in the Wintzenheim municipal forest. Its landscape includes three fishponds, a forester’s house, picnic areas and a botanical educational trail. The trail starts at the La Forge forester’s house and follows the cycle path and passes through the forest on an easy walk of about an hour. This makes it easy to distinguish the nature walk by its duration from the longer routes: four other routes, ranging from 10 to 34 kilometres, are also accessible from the Vallon. Check trail conditions before setting out.

Those looking for a walk with a botanical focus will find a different kind of experience along the educational trail than on the longer routes. The picnic areas and forester’s house complement the trails described in the Vallon, but they are not associated with a particular itinerary or a set length of stay.

Gardens and Historic Buildings

In La Forge, Parc Kiener covers 14 hectares. A circular path surrounds the historic garden, where American tulip trees, sequoias and cedars have been preserved. These trees represent the range of plants used in the park’s landscaping during the time of garden and landscape designer Auguste-Napoléon Baumann (1804–1884). The circular path offers a way to appreciate both the garden design and its inherited planting.

The local architectural heritage includes a wide range of historic landmarks. Thurnburg dates back to the 13th century, now serves as the town hall and was long known as a “castle.” Château du Pflixbourg is first mentioned in 1220. These details point to different historical reference points and do not place the two buildings in the same period.

In the Logelbach district, the Herzog Chapel is a rare example of French Neo-Gothic architecture in Alsace; it is listed in the supplementary inventory of historic monuments. The district’s parish church is Neoclassical in style and decorated with numerous stucco details and molded ornaments. It was the first church in Alsace and the second in France to be built of reinforced concrete. The chapel and church thus offer two distinct architectural themes.

Castle Views, Culture and Hiking Times

Château du Hohlandsbourg stands at an elevation of 620 metres. From there, the 360-degree panorama takes in the Black Forest, the Alsatian plain and the Vosges. A playful, interactive interpretive trail presents the history and development of the site, from its Bronze Age beginnings to the present day. Self-guided and guided tours, as well as exhibitions, round out the experience. Festive, cultural and recreational events, mostly with a medieval theme, are also held; the programme may vary by season. If an event is important to your trip, check the dates in advance.

Time estimates also help when choosing among the hiking options. The botanical educational trail is designed to take about an hour. The four easy circular walks in “Balades autour des châteaux” each take about 1.5 hours and are suitable for everyone. They differ mainly in their themes and stated durations. The right choice depends on whether you want to focus on the botanical trail or one of the castle-themed circular walks.

Routes and Food and Wine Experiences in the Canton

Some activities are offered across the wider canton of Wintzenheim, rather than solely in the town. “Bicyclette go!” includes two circular routes for exploring the canton’s vineyards, as well as family-friendly routes. The “Canton en balade” programme offers family-friendly circular walks starting in the canton’s ten municipalities. The Route Gourmande adds a wine-focused element to these activities: winegrowers across the canton invite visitors into their cellars to taste grape varieties and learn about their expertise. These canton-wide activities can be considered as separate interests without equating them with a particular walk in Wintzenheim.
