Wettolsheim combines forest trails and wine country with a medieval structure and religious heritage. When planning your trip, you can choose between an easy, short hike, a longer event walk in May and several mountain biking routes. The Grand Cru Steingrubler and the history of local cultural sites also give your stay distinct points of interest.

Forest Trails and Routes

The Sentier Herzog is an easy, 2.8-kilometre forest trail from the Châtelet du Hagueneck to the former boating pond of the Herzog family. Its stated length and easy grade make it a clearly defined option for a walk. The named destination recalls the Herzog family’s former connection with the area.

For a longer hike, try the Balade Gourmande de Wettolsheim: it is about nine kilometres long and passes through vineyards and forest around the Châtelet du Hagueneck. The event takes place every year in May. Compared with the Sentier Herzog, it is both longer and tied to a recurring event date. Check the specific dates for your travel year.

Several mountain biking routes of the Syndicat Forestier du Massif des Châteaux have one of their starting points at Salle La Vigneraie in Wettolsheim. This adds a range of cycling routes to the hiking options. Trail conditions and signage may change; check the latest trail information before setting out.

The Châtelet and Religious Heritage

The Châtelet du Hagueneck is a listed historic structure. It was built towards the end of the 11th century on a rocky outcrop in a valley above Wettolsheim. Its keep is accessible to walkers. Check the situation on site before planning your visit.

The Grotte de Lourdes is also in Wettolsheim, in the town centre. It is a life-size replica of the Grotte de Massabielle in Lourdes and was built in 1912. It is still the setting for numerous religious ceremonies; their dates may vary.

The parish church of Saint-Rémy houses two reliquaries of Saint Fridolin and Saint Gertrude. They were made by Volfrom, a maker of religious ornaments from Nancy, probably around 1909. Together with the grotto, they offer two distinct aspects of religious heritage: a grotto used for ceremonies and sacred objects in the parish church.

Wine Country and Seasonal Activities

The Grand Cru Steingrubler lies west of the commune of Wettolsheim. It faces south or southeast. This makes the vineyard a specific point of interest for anyone wishing to include wine country in their travel plans.

Another wine-related activity was the guided vineyard walk “Rendez-vous en terroir connu!”. It was scheduled to include a wine tasting in a winemaker’s cellar between 25 June and 27 August 2026. If you are planning for a later year, check the applicable dates.
