The circular route, chapels and ponds offer different ways to enjoy a stay in Ueberstrass. The Chapels Circuit is a short circular route lined with ponds and accessible to everyone. Other attractions include religious sites, a wooded ridge, and hiking and cycling options. The length and hiking time are provided for the Chapels Circuit from Friesen to Ueberstrass.

Chapels and religious life

Notre Dame de Grunenwald stands on a wooded ridge separating the Largue Valley from the Suarcine Valley. The first sanctuary was probably built in the second half of the 15th century. The chapel is open daily and admission is free; opening arrangements may change, so it is advisable to check before visiting.

The Saint-Jean Chapel also dates from the 15th century. The dates differ in what they refer to: for Notre Dame, the probable dating concerns the first sanctuary and the second half of the 15th century, while Saint-Jean is considered a building from the 15th century. According to information updated in March 2026, the Saint-Jean Chapel was closed to the public because of age-related damage and vandalism. Check before visiting to see whether access has since changed. Masses are regularly celebrated at the Église Sainte-Thérèse-de-l'Enfant-Jésus; choir concerts and smaller concerts are occasionally held there. The program may change. If you would like to plan your visit around a service or event, check the latest dates.

Ponds and nature

Ueberstrass is one of the municipalities in the Natura 2000 site FR4201811 “Sundgau, région des étangs.”

Étang du Bois Vert is a one-hectare pond in a natural, wooded setting. Fishing for predatory fish, carp, tench and white fish is possible at the pond. Fishing regulations and species rules may change; check the current requirements before fishing.

Hiking and cycling

The Chapels Circuit from Friesen to Ueberstrass is 7.3 kilometres long and is listed as a 2-hour-and-30-minute hike. On the Chapels Circuit, a gravel section and three changes of direction are followed by a paved downhill section towards Ueberstrass. The stated distance and hiking time provide a concrete estimate; trail surfaces and conditions may change, so check the current trail conditions before setting out.

Mountain bike route No. 20, “Au fil de la Largue,” passes through Ueberstrass. The two routes are described differently: the Chapels Circuit has a stated distance and hiking time, while the mountain bike route’s specific connection to the area is that it passes through Ueberstrass.

Guided quad tour

Sund'Go Découverte offers a guided quad tour through the Sundgau; the meeting point is 24 Grand Rue in Ueberstrass. This guided activity can be considered as a separate option for your stay alongside the hiking and cycling trails.
