Thann is the starting point of the famous Alsace Wine Route. There are also trails through the Rangen vineyard, the ruins of the Château de l’Engelbourg, museums and an annual commemorative event. When choosing accommodation, you can first consider whether winegrowing and hiking, or instead history, collections and a specific event date, should be the focus. The two Rangen routes differ clearly in length; the other themes offer cultural alternatives without requiring a fixed itinerary.

Rangen Vineyard and Wine Trail

The Rangen vineyard covers 18.5 hectares and is classified as Grand Cru across its entire area. The figure describes its size, while the classification applies to the whole area. A wine trail with 18 information boards and its own waymarkers runs through Rangen. This combines the theme of winegrowing with a specific route, whose waymarkers and information boards are part of the trail.

There are two route options: an easy 3 km family route and a more challenging 5 km route to the Croix du Rangen. Their lengths can be compared directly, and their descriptions also clearly differ. Check local trail conditions before setting out.

Ruins and Digital Experience

The ruins of the Château de l’Engelbourg are known as the “Witch’s Eye.” They can be reached on foot from Thann city centre in 30 minutes. This gives you a specific way to factor the walk from the centre into your visit plans. As trail conditions can change, it is advisable to check them before setting out.

A digital experience about the history of the château, released on 27 August 2025, combines virtual reality, augmented reality and mini-games for children and adults. If this experience is important to your plans, check its current availability before your trip.

Museums and Local History

The Musée de la société d’histoire “Les Amis de Thann” is recognised as a “Musée de France.” The collections of the Musée des Amis de Thann cover the history of Thann, Alsatian folk art, traditional crafts, winegrowing and industrial history. The subject matter therefore ranges from local history to crafts, wine and industry.

The former Halle aux Blés dates from 1519 and houses a museum of art and local history. Alongside its use as a museum, its construction date is a useful point of reference when planning a cultural visit. As museum arrangements may change, check current visiting options before your visit.

30 June in Thann

Every year on 30 June, Thann commemorates the legend of its founding with the “Crémation des trois sapins.” The date is a clear point of reference for anyone who would like to include this event in their travel plans. Check the specific programme before your trip. This will help you decide whether a visit around this date or a stay focused on the wine trail, ruins and museums better suits your interests.
