At the northern entrance to Sierentz lies the Hochkirch cemetery. It surrounds a chapel that stands on the site of the former mother church of Saint-Martin. The history of this place goes back a long way: the origins of the former Hochkirch church date to the 7th and 8th centuries, during the Christianisation of the Sundgau. In 1835, the church was demolished; its stones were reused to build the present-day parish church.

Hochkirch and other historic sites

The grave of François Joseph Müller is also located in the cemetery. The tomb was made by Joseph Barta from Rouffach. Here, you can encounter both the history of the former mother church and a tomb with a named artist and place of origin.

Another chapel is the Chapelle Saint-Wendelin on route de Kembs in Sierentz. It bears the year 1897 and was restored in 1988. Other buildings also tell of different periods in the town’s history: the former courthouse at 17 rue Rogg Haas dates from the German period. The former seigneurial faience manufactory at 2 rue Sainte-Marie dates from the 18th century. The addresses help you distinguish these two historic sites clearly.

The Maison de la Bascule offers another glimpse into past everyday life. The restored former farm has a weighbridge that was used to weigh grain wagons. Inside, there is a sitting room with a Kachelofa as well as meeting rooms. Confirm indoor access before visiting.

Walking and cycling

The Hochkirch circular trail is part of the marked and maintained Pays de Sierentz trail network. The network is intended for walking and cycling. The circular trail thus offers a local connection to Hochkirch, while the EuroVélo 5 cycle route passes through Sierentz. If you plan to use EuroVélo 5, check route conditions before setting off.

This distinction is useful when planning: the Hochkirch circular trail is part of a marked network for walking and cycling; EuroVélo 5 is the route that passes through the town.
