In Moosch, landscapes, architecture and local traditions come together. You can plan your visit around a variety of interests: walks and viewpoints around the village, a loop hike to the Cascade du Bubalafels with a stated duration, or a look at the history of the Saint-Augustin parish church. This allows you to tailor your trip to the subjects that interest you most.

Landscapes and trails around Moosch

Moosch is one of 188 municipalities in the Ballons des Vosges Regional Nature Park. The municipality is also among those in the Hautes Vosges haut-rhinoises ZNIEFF. Outdoor activities include the Sentier des 4 collines: around Moosch, it offers numerous viewpoints and pleasant walks. The Cascade du Bubalafels is another destination for hiking enthusiasts. A route description from 2020 lists the hike there as an easy 45-minute loop. Check current trail conditions before setting out.

The descriptions offer different ways to choose between the two hiking options: the Sentier des 4 collines focuses on viewpoints and walks around the village, while a specific duration is given for the loop to the Cascade du Bubalafels. The geology at the waterfall is also noteworthy. The rock face consists of volcanic rocks such as keratophyre and keratophyric tuff, or volcanosedimentary rocks such as greywacke. Those interested in landforms can combine a hike with a specifically named geological feature.

Church and local traditions

The Saint-Augustin parish church was built between 1861 and 1862 and consecrated in 1864. Its nave has three aisles; the nave and choir are covered by rib vaults. This makes the church a distinct architectural landmark in Moosch: in addition to its construction history, you can take note of the interior layout and the vaulting.

A recurring local tradition is the procession on August 15. Every year, a large group of parishioners climbs one of the four hills around Moosch. In doing so, they fulfill the vow made by the civil and religious authorities in 1916: to erect a votive monument dedicated to the Virgin Mary if the village were spared. The Colline du bûcher is also associated with a local tradition, the burning of the St. John’s fire. Both traditions offer a different perspective on local history from the architecture of the parish church.

Culture, nature and practical information

La Mine Ă  bouquins has around 6,000 books. Exhibitions and conferences are also held there. Depending on the season or festivities, arts and crafts and painting workshops for children take place during school holidays. The venue combines a book collection with changing cultural activities; if a particular date matters to your plans, check the current program.

Fishing is another activity described: anglers can fish in a natural setting at Étang des noisetiers. Local conditions may change, so it is worth checking in advance. The La Mésange shelter in the Moosch forest is open to the public; find out about its current condition before visiting.

For a meal, the Auberge du Belacker is another place to visit. It serves meals made with farm products, as well as traditional home cooking and various specialties. From Moosch, the inn can be reached via forest roads; the 7 km route passes through Malmerspach and Mitzach. Road conditions and access permissions may change, so check them before your visit. This lets you complement Moosch’s landscapes and cultural attractions with a specific culinary offering, without conflating the different routes and visiting conditions.
