Masevaux combines historic sites, green spaces and hiking destinations with a range of regional products. Highlights range from the archives of the former lordship to a viewpoint accessible only on foot. To get your bearings, it helps to distinguish the destinations by their individual character: cultural history, urban greenery, views or archaeological ruins.
Cultural history in Masevaux
The Maison du patrimoine regularly opens its doors to present its collections and latest acquisitions to the public. The Maison also houses the extensive archives of the former lordship of Masevaux, which date back to the Middle Ages. This means the collections and historical archives are held in the same building, although they do not cover the same subject matter.
Two church sites also offer different insights into the town’s history. The facade and tower of the Catholic Church of Saint-Martin are listed as historic monuments under a decree dated May 24, 1937. The choir of the former Abbey Church of Saint-Léger is another outstanding historic site in Masevaux. At Saint-Martin, the listing applies to two specific architectural features; at the Saint-Léger site, the focus is on the choir. This distinction makes the two historical references easy to tell apart.
Green spaces and old fruit varieties
Boulevard du chemin de fer forms a green corridor about 750 meters long. The green spaces cover 12,000 square meters and include lawns, flower meadows and play areas. The length and surface area represent two different measurements: the first describes the corridor, while the second describes the green spaces. These areas give the boulevard a different character from a single park with just one type of use.
The Grambaechle variety conservation garden has its own focus: preserving old varieties of fruit trees. Masevaux therefore offers both landscaped green spaces with play areas and the preservation of historic fruit varieties as distinct features.
Hiking destinations with different highlights
The Vierge d’Alsace can be reached only on foot via a moderately difficult hiking trail. From there, you can see the village as well as the Triebelskopf and Heindenkopf mountains. The access and level of difficulty are clearly specified: if you plan to visit this destination, bear in mind that the hike is rated as moderate. The viewpoint pairs the trail with a specific view, rather than being a hike without a more precisely defined outlook.
Another destination is the ruins of Château du Montori. They can be reached via a trail marked by the Club vosgien. The trail marker is a red castle symbol on a white background. To choose between the two destinations, a simple comparison helps: at the Vierge d’Alsace, the views and the trail’s level of difficulty are the main focus; at Château du Montori, it is the archaeological ruins and the trail marker.
Regional products
The Ferme-auberge de l’Entzenbach offers organic products such as cheese and beef, as well as snacks, year-round. Bargkass fondue is available to order. This condition applies to the fondue; if that is the dish you plan to have, you will need to order it.
Whether you would like to combine your stay with collections and architectural history, green spaces, a hike or regional produce depends on which of these different highlights appeals to you.
