In Levoncourt, marked trails through the Alsatian Jura, named scenic viewpoints and village history come together. When planning your stay, you can decide whether to focus on hiking distances, landscapes or the area’s historical connections.
Hiking with an Option to Break the Journey into Stages
The Chemin de Mariastein is a marked, 30 km hiking trail from Levoncourt to Mariastein. It passes through the Alsatian Jura and follows a former pilgrimage route. You can walk the entire route in one go or in stages. The first stage is 8 km long and runs from the Julien Idoux car park in Levoncourt to La Charrière in Winkel. These two distances give you a clear idea of the planned scope: you can choose the entire trail or just the first stage. All starting points for the Chemin de Mariastein are accessible by car. As route details may change, check them before setting out.
Viewpoints and Landscapes
Above Levoncourt, the Roc au Corbeau rises to a height of 735 m. This limestone outcrop lies on a path along the French-Swiss border. From there, you can see the ruins of the Château du Morimont and its former manor house, as well as the Vosges on the horizon.
The “Par Oberlarg et la Crête de la Montagne” route passes through meadows and woodland. Along the way, there are views of the ruins of the Château du Morimont and the upper Largue Valley. The starting point is at the lower car park by the church in Levoncourt. The Rocher de la Sorcière, near the Ferme des Ebourbettes, is another scenic destination: it overlooks the upper Largue Valley and part of the Swiss Ajoie. The views are distinctly different: from the Roc au Corbeau, you can see the château, the former manor house and the Vosges on the horizon; from the Rocher de la Sorcière, the view extends across the Largue Valley and into the Ajoie.
Nature Trails and Village Connections
The “Autour de Levoncourt” route connects a viewpoint over the village with a wildlife park, ponds, streams, woodland, meadows, and local flora and fauna. It is considered a family-friendly walk and requires no special equipment. The route takes in everything from waterways and ponds to open meadows and woodland. If you want to experience the area from different perspectives, this same route offers both the viewpoint and these natural features.
The area’s ecological context is also documented: Levoncourt is associated with the ZNIEFF “Vallées de la Largue et affluents.” This is included in the larger ZNIEFF Type 2 “Vallées de la Largue, de sa source à sa confluence avec l'Ill, et de ses affluents.”
A Cultural-Historical Detail
One specific link to the village’s history is the sacristy of Église Saint-Maurice. Dating from 1786, it houses two wooden statues. The sacristy adds a specific historical note to the village’s story; the former pilgrimage route and the ruins of the Château du Morimont complement the hiking and landscape themes.
