The Musée des métiers du bois in Labaroche is dedicated to trees in the forest and woodworking from the late 19th to the early 20th century. The subject connects wood as a natural starting point with its processing during a clearly defined historical period.
Woodworking and Building History
Chapelle Saint-Wandrille also offers a historical focus. It was rebuilt in 1888 and 1889, badly damaged during both world wars, restored by members of the parish, and reopened for worship in 1978. It is also the only sanctuary in Alsace dedicated to Saint Wandrille.
Its architecture includes a front gable wall of dressed stone with a porch, three pointed trefoil windows, a wooden bell turret and a slate roof. These varied elements give the chapel a distinct architectural character: the façade, windows, bell support and roof can each be considered individually.
Angora Goats and Mohair
Ferme à La Bassette is an educational farm in Labaroche. It keeps around 80 Angora goats for mohair production; herd size may vary. The farm regularly welcomes groups and families and introduces them to the animals, goat farming and mohair products. Unlike the museum, which presents woodworking as a historical subject, the farm teaches about goat farming and mohair through the animals and products.
Views and Hiking Trails
The small summit of Gestion is at an altitude of 876 metres and offers views of the Pays Welsche and the Hautes Vosges. It is therefore a clearly identified viewpoint for anyone interested in these two vistas.
The municipal hiking trail network has five starting points near various car parks in the municipality. A 2015 municipal bulletin described the marked circular hiking trails as open to the public and as a way to discover the municipality’s varied landscapes. If you are planning a hike today, check current information on accessibility and parking.
One special hiking option is the playful tour “balade ludique - le château du Hohnack”: families can solve age-appropriate puzzles along the way. It combines hiking with a puzzle challenge, setting it apart from an outing focused mainly on the scenery.
Circular Route and Château du Hohnack
The mountain biking loop “Circuit VTT 8 – le tour de Labaroche” starts in La Place, passes through Giragoutte and by the Croix de Wihr, runs near the Château du Hohnack, and then descends to Moreyfontaine.
The grounds of the Château du Hohnack are visible at all times, but access to the castle complex is prohibited. As physical access restrictions may change during maintenance work, check the current access rules before visiting.
The options for planning a stay vary considerably: the museum and chapel offer different focuses on crafts, architecture and history, while the farm visit, viewpoint, puzzle hike and mountain biking loop offer different ways to spend your time. This lets you decide whether culture, animals, scenic views or outdoor activity will shape your stay in Labaroche.
