Kaysersberg is a place worth visiting on the Alsace Wine Route, and the Weiss flows through it. When planning your trip, you can choose between architectural history and museums, a walk along the river, and a bike ride to Colmar. If you’re looking for hotels in Kaysersberg, you can tailor your stay to your interests: Would you mainly like to see buildings and collections, or also plan a route on foot or by bike?

Castle and views

Kaysersberg Castle was built around 1200 to block the routes coming from Lorraine. Its history is therefore also shaped by a specific strategic purpose. The castle is open year-round and can be visited independently. As access details may change, check them before your visit. The climb to the top of the keep includes 122 steps. In good visibility, the panorama extends over Kaysersberg, the valley entrance and the vineyards as far as the Black Forest in Germany. The number of steps gives you a specific indication of what to expect on this part of the visit; the view explicitly depends on good visibility.

Towers, churches and bridge

The Tour Kessler is square and about 22 metres high. The churches and bridge also reveal different aspects of architectural history. The Église catholique de l'Invention de la Sainte-Croix is protected as a historic monument. The chapelle Saint-Michel et ossuaire was rebuilt in 1463; its vaults are decorated with paintings from the early 16th century. This makes it possible to distinguish chronologically between the chapel’s reconstruction and its later painted decoration. The fortified bridge over the Weiss was rebuilt in stone and is said to have been fortified in 1514.

Two museums, different perspectives

The Centre Schweitzer presents Albert Schweitzer’s life and his commitment to peace and humanity through an interactive exhibition and personal belongings. The Musée Historique de Kaysersberg is housed in a former half-timbered house and explores events that shaped the town and its residents. The museums therefore offer clearly different thematic perspectives: the Centre Schweitzer focuses on one person and his commitment, while the Musée Historique focuses on the history of the town and its residents. As museum exhibitions may change, check in advance what will be on display during your visit.

On foot or by bike

The Circuit poussette - Kaysersberg is 3.5 kilometres long and is described as a family walk suitable even for small children. It follows the banks of the Weiss and crosses a footbridge towards the campsite. Before setting out, it’s worth checking the latest route access information. For a different perspective, take the Circuit cyclo - À la découverte de Colmar: it runs from Kaysersberg to Colmar and back to Kaysersberg via Ingersheim. To choose between them, compare the mode of transport and the route: a walk by the river described as suitable for families, or a bike ride with Colmar as the destination and a return route via Ingersheim.

Christmas market in the historic centre

During the Christmas season, the Marché de Noël artisanal et authentique offers craft products and the chance to meet artisans in small wooden huts. The market takes place in the historic centre, in the Arsenal courtyard and in the passage behind the church. If you’d like to include it in your stay, check the dates and schedule before travelling, as the arrangements may change.
