Goldbach-Altenbach brings together a rich cultural heritage with walking and mountain biking routes. Its history stretches from Freundstein Castle, mentioned in 1297, to the communal use of the Ferme du Gerstacker; outdoors, a circular hiking route and mountain bike trails offer different ways to plan your visit. When choosing, you can decide whether to allow more time for historical sites or for a tour.
Castle and Farm History
The ruins of Château de Freundstein were classified as a Monument historique by decree on April 27, 1922. The château was first mentioned in 1297 and was initially shared between Murbach Abbey and the Bishop of Strasbourg before being granted as a fief to the Waldner family. The castle can therefore be understood both through its medieval ownership and through the protected status of its ruins. The château and the Ferme represent different historical themes: division and feudal tenure on the one hand, communal transfer and pasture use on the other.
Two historical periods can be distinguished at the Ferme du Gerstacker. In 1558, Murbach Abbey transferred the farm to the hamlets of Goldbach, Altenbach, and Neuhause for communal use. The present-day building dates from the 18th century. The farm served the villagers as a communal summer pasture. The dates refer to different things: 1558 marks the communal transfer, while the 18th century refers to the present-day building.
Hiking the Circuit du Gerstacker
The Circuit du Gerstacker is a 7-kilometer circular hike with a stated duration of 2 hours and 30 minutes and an elevation gain of 380 meters. It starts at the hiking car park in Goldbach-Altenbach and passes through forests and high-altitude pastures; along the way, the route offers views over the valley. Taken together, the distance, duration, and elevation gain provide a practical guide for planning your day. Check local trail conditions before setting out.
Mountain Biking
The Circuit du Firstacker is a 27.70-kilometer mountain bike route with an elevation gain of 968 meters that passes through Goldbach-Altenbach. Check trail conditions and markings before setting out. The Gerstacker VTT FFC No. 35 is a challenging route through the high-altitude pastures of the Hautes-Vosges d’Alsace. The Col Amic VTT FFC No. 33 leads to Col Amic, a prominent point on the ascent to the Grand Ballon, and offers the chance to discover the mountain villages of Goldbach-Altenbach.
Choose Routes by Distance and Focus
If you’re planning a significantly shorter outing, the 7-kilometer circular hike is on a different scale from the 27.70-kilometer Firstacker route. The hike is also listed as taking 2 hours and 30 minutes, with an elevation gain of 380 meters; the Firstacker route has an elevation gain of 968 meters. The mountain bike routes also differ in focus: high-altitude pastures on Route No. 35, and Col Amic and mountain villages on Route No. 33. This lets you plan your day around the time available, the distance, or the landscape and destination.
