In Eglingen, you can plan around specific destinations to explore cultural history and enjoy the outdoors. The parish church of Saint-Léger reflects a building history spanning several periods; cycling and walking routes lead through the countryside along the Canal du Rhône au Rhin and towards Saint-Bernard. When planning your stay, you can decide whether local history, a bike ride or a walk will be your main focus.

Saint-Léger: building history and bell

The parish church of Saint-Léger is in Eglingen on Rue Principale. The former building was destroyed during the First World War, apart from the Gothic sacristy dating from the 14th century; the present church was rebuilt in 1927. Its building history thus brings together a surviving medieval structure and a 20th-century reconstruction.

The parish church also houses a bell dated 1651, which the community acquired in 1803. The two dates mark different stages in the bell’s history: 1651 is its date, while 1803 is when the community acquired it. The bell therefore adds a distinct historical dimension to the building’s story.

Cycling routes along the Canal du Rhône au Rhin

Mountain biking circuit No. 30, “Autour d’Eglingen,” starts from the cycle path at Eglingen and runs almost entirely through the countryside. The Canal du Rhône au Rhin is one of the sights along the route. The Puits à balancier d’Eglingen is also a named attraction on the local mountain biking routes.

Another option is the 34 km gravel route “La Porte d’Alsace,” which follows the canal to Eglingen. The route descriptions offer different points of reference: the mountain bike trail is described as a circuit starting at Eglingen, while the gravel route’s distance and course along the canal to the village are specified. Check the current route conditions before setting out.

On foot, by the water and in the village

The approximately 5 km walking route from Eglingen to Saint-Bernard offers a different perspective on the landscape. It passes fields and orchards, goes through a dense reed bed and reaches the banks of the Canal du Rhône au Rhin. At approximately 5 km long, the walk is an option if you would rather explore the landscape on foot than by bike.

The Restaurant à l’Arbre vert is by the canal and its cycling routes, and is accessible to people with reduced mobility. Services and access details may change; check the current conditions before your visit. The restaurant serves regional specialities featuring carp and frog legs. As the menu may change, it is worth checking the current offering if these dishes are important to your plans.

The educational trail at the pond in Eglingen is another point of interest. In 2023, it was described as having information panels, with pupils contributing to their texts and illustrations. The condition of the panels and access may change. If you plan to visit the trail, check in advance whether it is currently accessible.
