Bischwihr offers two clearly distinct highlights for a stay: local history, with named buildings, and the Sentier de la foulque, a walk with specific information on distance and duration. The waterways are also described precisely. When planning, you can decide whether to focus on historical details or set aside time for a tour featuring landscapes and nature. The figures for the walk help you estimate how much time to allow for this part of your visit.

Waterways and orientation

The Blind runs through Bischwihr in the east; the Canal de Colmar forms the northern boundary of the village. The waterways therefore have distinct spatial roles: the stream runs through the village, while the canal marks its northern side.

Church, house and earlier local history

The Eglise protestante on Grand Rue was built in 1853. The Simultaneum, introduced in 1793, continued in Bischwihr until 1853, when the present Protestant church was built. An inscription in German on the gable commemorates the consecration of the church on 17 May 1853. The sequence is therefore clear: the Simultaneum began and then ended in the year the church was built; the inscription gives the specific consecration date.

The house dating from 1755 at 55 Grand-Rue is also one of Bischwihr’s attractions. Compared with the church built in 1853, the house is considerably older. The address 55 Grand-Rue gives a precise location; Grand Rue is given for the Eglise protestante. The historical perspective extends beyond individual buildings: Bischwihr lies on the site of a former Gallic road, and some milestones still mark the surrounding area. Dated buildings and the historical road connection thus offer different ways of exploring local history.

Walk and getting there

The Sentier de la foulque is 4 km long and takes 1.5 hours. It starts behind the Catholic church in Bischwihr. The two figures help with planning in different ways: the distance indicates the length of the route, while the duration shows how much time the walk takes. Along the way, visitors discover the Canal de Colmar and the landscapes of the Ried; the walk also offers insights into the local fauna and flora. In addition to the route itself, landscapes and nature are therefore central themes. If you would like to include these interests in your visit, you can plan the walk as a separate activity.
