Bartenheim can be explored through two distinct highlights: the history of its chapels and churches, and water activities at East Park. The area also offers landscapes that change with the seasons and a cycling route that passes through the town. You can plan your visit based on whether you are more interested in architectural history, water sports or a specific cycling route.
Churches and Architectural History
The Chapelle Saint-Nicolas is documented as far back as the 15th century. The present building dates largely from the second half of the 17th century; the two dates therefore refer to different stages in its history. The chapel was restored three times in the 20th century: in 1926, 1956 and 1989. These dates trace a timeline from its earliest documented mention, through the later structure, to its restorations.
The choir tower of the 13th-century church of Saint-Georges has survived. The vault on the ground floor of this tower dates from the 15th century. Another phase of construction concerns the nave: it was destroyed in a fire in 1934, and the new neo-Gothic Church of Saint-Georges was completed in 1939. The tower, vault and new church thus represent different periods in the building’s history. Unlike the restorations of the Chapelle Saint-Nicolas, Saint-Georges’s more recent architectural history is marked by the destruction of the nave and its subsequent replacement by a neo-Gothic church.
The Chapelle Notre-Dame-des-Champs, also known as Schaecher, was built around 1800. It is associated with a carved Calvary relief dated 1804. The relief was transferred from this chapel to the Chapelle Saint-Martin in Bartenheim-la-Chaussée. Its date, its former location and the place to which it was transferred should be clearly distinguished.
Water Sports at East Park
East Park is located on the site of a former gravel pit that was converted into a leisure center for water sports and recreation. A 100% electric cable tow enables wakeboarding, water skiing, kneeboarding and wakeskating. The park also offers an aqua park with inflatable attractions, as well as stand-up paddleboarding on the water.
The activities differ in type: the cable tow focuses on four named sports, alongside the aqua park and stand-up paddleboarding. Before your visit, check whether the water activities described as seasonal are operating on your chosen date.
Seasons and Cycling Route
Bartenheim offers landscapes that change with the seasons. For cycling plans, there is a specific route through the town: the 24.4-kilometer cycling route BL995 – Les Moulins du Muehlgraben passes through Bartenheim. Check the route details before setting out. This lets you take both the seasonal changes in the landscape and the stated route length into account when planning your trip.
