Altkirch stands on a rocky spur above the Ill Valley. A medieval city gate, themed walking tours, street art and a forest trail offer different ways to explore the town. When planning your visit, you can first decide whether to focus on local history, art or outdoor activities.

A city gate with a visible history of construction

The Vieille Porte, also known as the Porte de Belfort, is one of Altkirch’s two oldest city gates. It was built in 1245 as part of the town’s fortifications. Visitors can walk through the gate and see the inner vaults and the dovecote. This makes it possible to connect a specific structure with the town’s medieval history.

The Parcours Patrimoine adds to this perspective with walking tours covering Saint-Morand, the Middle Ages, the Renaissance, and the 18th and 19th centuries. The themes range from individual historical periods to Saint-Morand. Those who want to explore more than a single building will find a variety of historical topics here.

Museum, art and Sundgau

The Musée Sundgauvien focuses on the history, everyday life and customs of southern Alsace, particularly the Sundgau. Its collections cover archaeology, applied arts, fine arts, ethnology and history. The building itself is protected as a historic monument. A visit therefore combines a regional focus with a wide-ranging collection.

The Prieuré Saint-Morand also preserves specific religious artefacts: it contains a recumbent effigy of Saint Morand and a reliquary donated by Archduke Frederick of Tyrol in 1428. The CRAC Alsace offers a different perspective: it is a contemporary art centre in Altkirch devoted to research and artistic creation.

The Parcours Street Art follows a walking route from the town centre to the Saint-Morand district, inviting visitors to discover murals and graffiti. It includes 13 works that are still visible, including pieces by local, regional and international artists. The number of works may change over time, and individual pieces may also be replaced.

Walks and outdoor activities

For exercise in the forest, the Parcours Vita offers a circular route of about one kilometre with 15 fitness stations accessible to everyone. The facilities may be renewed or changed. If you plan to take the route, you can check the latest information in advance.

The Randoland discovery trail offers a different kind of exploration: this family-friendly treasure hunt is aimed at children aged four and over, and combines clues with the town’s natural and architectural heritage. Before your trip, check whether the accompanying leaflet is available.

Plan around events and the cultural programme

La Forêt Enchantée takes place annually in Altkirch. Around ten Alsatian fairy tales and legends are brought to life in the town centre. The dates and programme vary from year to year, so it is worth checking the event schedule before planning your visit around it.

The cultural programme at the Halle au Blé includes theatre, music, comedy and performances for children. As the programme changes over time, check the current events for a specific date. This lets you choose when to travel based on a particular cultural event.

Plan your journey and accommodation

The Mulhouse–Belfort TER rail line serves Altkirch station. If you plan to travel by train, check the current timetable. The car park at the Ill is recommended as the starting point for Sundgau Cycling Route No. 2; this recommendation may also change, so it is worth checking the latest route information.

Compare the location of each accommodation option with your planned destinations and, if travelling by train, with the station. This way, your choice of hotel can fit your specific travel plans without requiring you to squeeze all your activities into a single day.
