Two castle ruins and the GR53 give Windstein a distinctive theme for a stay. The structures are clearly different: Château du Nouveau-Windstein sits at the end of a sandstone plateau and overlooks the valley on three sides; Château du Vieux-Windstein is characterized by numerous areas carved into the rock. There are also hiking options on different scales. Visitors choosing Windstein can therefore consider historic architecture and a specific hiking option together without making them a single activity.

Castle Ruins with Distinctive Architecture

Château du Nouveau-Windstein combines a striking location with distinctive defensive features. The complex includes a blind shield wall, a pentagonal bastion and a round tower with horizontal loopholes. The ruin can thus be described not only by its position on the plateau: its different structural elements also give a clear impression of its architecture.

At Château du Vieux-Windstein, the ruin stands out for its connection with numerous areas carved into the rock. This characteristic sets it apart architecturally from Nouveau-Windstein. Its heritage protection also has specific dates: the ruins of Château du Nouveau-Windstein were classified as a “Monument historique” by decree on March 21, 1983. The ruins of Château du Vieux-Windstein were listed as a “Monument historique” by decree on November 9, 1984. These dates place the structures in a historical context without equating their distinct architectural features.

ALCÔVE and the Former Castle Windows

Another cultural trace is ALCÔVE, a permanent landscape art installation in Windstein. It draws on the former windows of Château du Nouveau-Windstein. These windows were places to sit, read, talk and take in the landscape. The window motif therefore sets a different tone from the defensive architecture: it draws attention to how the windows were once used and to their relationship with the landscape. ALCÔVE can be considered a subject in its own right, alongside the surviving structural elements.

Hiking Between a Long-Distance Trail and a Loop

The GR53 crosses Alsace and the Northern Vosges from north to south or from south to north. It forms part of the GR5, which connects the North Sea with the Mediterranean. At Château du Nouveau-Windstein, the GR53 runs between Lembach and Niederbronn-les-Bains. At the edge of Windstein village, it passes between the two castles. These details show both the long-distance route’s broader course and its passage through the village; they are different scales of the same hiking trail.

The “Au fil des 5 châteaux” loop is another option: it is rated moderate, covers 17.2 kilometers and has a stated duration of five hours. This makes it easier to estimate the time required than from the regional extent of the GR53. The two types of trail offer a useful comparison: one is a long-distance route within a broader network, while the other is a loop with a specified distance and duration. Route details may change if the trail is revised. Before setting out, also check trail conditions and markings.

Check Access Before Your Visit

At Château du Vieux-Windstein, the GR53 leads to a secured rear platform and a front platform beside the climbing rock. The front platform offers a view of Windstein village. The ruins of Château du Nouveau-Windstein are accessible via a metal staircase inside. Access therefore differs between the two structures.

Safety requirements or conditions on site may affect access at Vieux-Windstein; conservation work may also play a role at Nouveau-Windstein. Check current access conditions before your visit. This allows you to factor the two castles, their respective architecture and the hiking options in Windstein into your plans separately.
