The Sauer Delta nature reserve between Seltz and Munchhausen covers 486 hectares; in Seltz, a sandy beach, botanical garden and historic sites complement its focus on nature. When planning your trip, you can choose between wetlands, culture and leisure activities.

Wetlands, Garden and Fishing Waters

The nature reserve protects Rhine wetlands, including the Sauer estuary, meadows and reed beds. Covering 486 hectares, it is a landscape that clearly differs from the individual leisure and cultural attractions in Seltz.

The botanical garden in Seltz offers a different nature experience. You can discover numerous tree species there, and there are also play and picnic areas. These offer distinct options: protected wetlands in the delta, or tree species and places to relax in the garden.

The 2.5-hectare lake in Seltz is fed by Alsace's groundwater reserves and is considered an important fly-fishing spot in Alsace. Its fish include rainbow trout, carp, tench, roach, perch and pike. If you plan to fish, check the current access rules locally.

History in the Church, Museum and Forest

The Catholic Church of Saint-Étienne was listed as a historic monument by decree on 9 March 2006. The listing covers the entire site, the painted reliefs on the west façade, the north portico and the campanile. A medieval section comprises the choir, sacristy and two chapels. The polygonal choir probably dates from the late 15th century; the building was remodelled in the late 15th and early 16th centuries.

The Musée Krumacker – Centre historique et culturel is located in the basement of the Seltz tourist office. Its exhibition explores history from the Celts and Romans to the time of Empress Adelaide around the year 1000. Objects on display include a Celtic bronze sword and Roman archaeological finds. Opening hours may vary; check the latest information before your visit.

The Sentier d'interprétation des tumuli is in the Hesselbusch forest, towards Hatten, near the motorway entrance. The visitor information notes include explanatory signs in French and German, parking for cars and buses, and free access. Check these details before your visit. An old Roman road connecting Seltz with Altenstadt ran alongside the tumuli.

Active Time by the Water and on Two Wheels

The Plage - Centre de plein air in Seltz combines a sandy beach with volleyball, football, pétanque and table tennis. There is also a play area for young children. Swimming is supervised in July and August; in June, supervision is provided on weekends only. If lifeguard supervision is important to your plans, check the latest operating information in advance and schedule your visit within the stated period.

For a bike ride, Route No. 24 runs from Haguenau via Betschdorf, Hatten and Seltz to Rastatt. From Seltz, the route continues across the Rhine by cable ferry to Rastatt. This makes it different from a visit focused only on attractions in Seltz: the route includes a river crossing and continues into Germany. Check the current signs and cable ferry service in advance.
