From the neo-Gothic Chapelle du Taennelkreuz, panoramic views extend across the plain; the ruins of Ortenbourg and Ramstein add a historical touch. There are also paths through vineyards, a protected landscape and an annual festival on the banks of the Aubach. When planning your visit, it is worth distinguishing between the historical sites, the different trail lengths and the seasonal offerings.

Castles, Chapel and History

In Scherwiller, the ruins of the castles of Ortenbourg and Ramstein are classified as historic monuments. Château de l’Ortenbourg was built around 1262. The neo-Gothic Chapelle du Taennelkreuz dates from 1906 and offers panoramic views across the plain. The two buildings point to different historical periods: the construction of Ortenbourg in the 13th century and the later-built chapel, whose views bring the landscape into focus.

When it comes to Château du Ramstein, it is especially important to note the visitor arrangements: it remains closed to visitors for safety reasons. Occasional site visits may be possible during the European Heritage Days. If you are planning such a visit, check before travelling whether it is taking place as part of the event.

Wine Trails and Different Routes

The signposted Sentier Viticole runs through the vineyards; you can choose between a 2- or 6-kilometre route. Along the way, you can enjoy views of the castles of Ortenbourg and Haut-Koenigsbourg. The trail can be walked year-round. Check access information before setting out to ensure your plans suit your intended visit. The two distances give you a clear choice about how far to walk.

The Sentier des murailles et des vignes offers a different focus: the 7.8-kilometre route runs between stone and vines and is accompanied by five interpretation panels. Compared with the 2-kilometre option on the Sentier Viticole, this is a considerably longer route; the panels also make learning about the area along the way an integral part of the trail.

The Sentier viticole de Scherwiller has explanatory panels and an orientation board. In July and August, guided tours with winegrowers from the village are offered there. As this is a seasonal offering and dates may vary, check the schedule before your visit.

The Circuit de l’Ortenbourg et du Ramstein starts at the car park by the Hühnelmühle and partly follows the GR5. Check the local trail markers before setting off. A circular route also crosses the Massif de l’Ortenbourg: the area is protected under a biotope order because of its remarkable fauna and flora.

The Aubach and an Event

Scherwiller hosts the Spectacle des Lavandières on the banks of the Aubach every year. Check the dates and programme before your visit. The Aubach has been a protected classified site since 1969 and is lined with almost 70 washhouses. Thus, both its built heritage and the recurring event are among the cultural highlights along the stream that you can take into account when planning your trip.
