Ohlungen brings together local religious history and a botanical nature trail in the forest. At the Klose Chapel, you can learn about its dedication and rebuilding, as well as two crosses with different commemorative associations. The “Circuit du bois d’Ohlungen,” by contrast, features botanical and thematic signs. This gives you a specific point of difference when choosing a destination: are you more interested in historical connections or the themes covered by a nature trail?
Chapel and crosses: different historical connections
The Chapelle Notre-Dame-des-Douleurs is in Ohlungen, at a place called La Klose. It was later named Chapelle Saint-Maurice; the name “la Klose” is also commonly used. As a former pilgrimage chapel, it was dedicated to Our Lady of Sorrows. The monumental cross was commissioned by residents of the commune of Ohlungen in 1770 and set into the chapel’s north wall. In 1817, the Klose Chapel was rebuilt by Nicolas Schneider. These two dates mark different events: the commission of the cross and the later rebuilding of the chapel.
The protection listing dated 25 April 1935 designates the former chapel as a historic monument; it includes an inscription plaque and a stone crucifix.
The stone cross “S’Pandurekrytel” dates from 1744. It commemorates an officer who was killed near Ohlungen during a battle in the War of the Austrian Succession. The cross is near the Klose Chapel. The crosses commemorate different things: the monumental cross was commissioned by local residents, while “S’Pandurekrytel” commemorates the officer who was killed.
A church in Ohlungen was also built during the First World War. The chronology of construction and commemoration therefore runs from the stone cross of 1744, through the commission of the cross in 1770 and the rebuilding in 1817, to a church built during the First World War. Each of these dates refers to a different historical connection.
Botanical forest trail
The “Circuit du bois d’Ohlungen” is a tourist botanical nature trail in a woodland area. It has 20 botanical signs and eight thematic signs. Botanical content is therefore the larger of the two designated areas, complemented by the thematic signs. The trail has 28 signs in total.
The route is designated as suitable for all target groups. As this classification may change if the route is revised, check it before planning if necessary.
When choosing where to stay, compare the different areas of interest: the chapel and crosses represent religious dedication and historical commemoration, while the Circuit features botanical and thematic signs in the forest. If you are looking for a holiday rental for a stay in Ohlungen, these different interests can provide a first point of reference when choosing your destination.
