Mittelhausen was first mentioned in 757 under the name Médiovilla. Its coat of arms, church, and former cemetery grounds tell further chapters of the town’s history. The trails offer other highlights: wetlands, orchards, hop fields, and panoramic views. The different walking times can help you plan your exploration around the time you have available.
History in the coat of arms and church
The three towers in the coat of arms symbolize the three gates through which people could pass through the medieval town fortifications. The coat of arms thus points to a specific feature of the town’s history. The present-day church also preserves a dated record: it houses an organ built by Koulen in 1890 and restored by Muhleisen in 1959.
The history of the church grounds also includes the former cemetery around Église Saint-Laurent. It was relocated outside the municipality in 1926; today, the former cemetery grounds are a park. A visit to Mittelhausen brings together different layers of history: its early mention as Médiovilla, the medieval gates represented in the coat of arms, and changes to the church grounds in the 20th century.
Choose trails by time and landscape
The Sentier des saveurs is a 15.6-kilometer walking trail designated as a nature and interpretation trail. The route takes about four hours. It passes through wetlands with numerous springs, as well as orchards and hop fields. The support poles in the hop fields are six to seven meters high. The trail has three possible starting points: Place de l’Église in Mittelhausen, the parking lot next to the church in Hohatzenheim, and the parking lot near the roundabout in Wingersheim.
Entre chapelle et houblon offers another option for planning your time. The walking route starts in Mittelhausen and loops around Hohatzenheim, passing hop fields and panoramic views. At 7.4 kilometers, it takes about two hours and is rated very easy. Its duration and character clearly distinguish it from the roughly four-hour Sentier des saveurs.
Balade ludique No. 9 takes about an hour and a half. It leads through the village and offers a chance to explore areas close to nature. This route focuses on the village and its natural surroundings, while Entre chapelle et houblon combines hop fields with panoramic views. So when choosing, consider not only the walking time but also the landscapes and places you would like to explore along the way.
The approximate times offer a practical comparison: Balade ludique No. 9 takes about half an hour less than Entre chapelle et houblon, while the Sentier des saveurs is estimated to take about twice as long as the two-hour walk. The routes also have different stated highlights: the village and natural surroundings on the Balade, hop fields and panoramic views around Hohatzenheim, and springs, orchards, and hop fields on the Sentier des saveurs. This lets you choose based on time and interests without combining the trails into a single walk.
