Kutzenhausen combines rural heritage with a signposted walking trail and an easy circular walk, which differ in length and estimated time. The village also has a Protestant church, a fortified farmstead and an organically maintained garden. For your plans, one choice takes centre stage: would you like to include a visit to a former farm in the shorter route, or allow more time for a longer circular walk through fields?

Rural Heritage and Historic Buildings

The “Maison Rurale de l’Outre-Forêt” is housed in a former 18th-century farmhouse and serves as a centre for interpreting rural heritage. The “Promenade découverte de Kutzenhausen” starts there and includes a visit and a tour of the former farmstead. It explores the region’s rural way of life.

The Protestant church and the fortified Fleckenstein farmstead each mark a different moment in time. The church was built between 1763 and 1765; its remarkable oak pulpit was made shortly after 1765. The fortified farmstead dates in its present form to the 16th century. The year 1565 is inscribed above the entrance to the farmstead. The buildings thus bring together different historical references: the present form of the farmstead, the church’s construction period and the pulpit, made somewhat later.

Two Walking Routes with Different Time Requirements

The signposted “Promenade découverte de Kutzenhausen” is 4.5 kilometres long and takes about 1 hour and 15 minutes. It is open to everyone, starts at the Maison Rurale de l’Outre-Forêt and passes around twenty notable buildings. A visit to the former farm and a tour exploring rural life are also part of the route. This makes it a manageable walk with a clearly defined cultural focus.

The easy circular walk “Sur les traces du pétrole” is longer, at 8.5 kilometres, and takes about 2 hours and 30 minutes. It crosses fields to the village of Kutzenhausen, its half-timbered houses and the Maison Rurale de l’Outre-Forêt. By comparison, the Promenade is the shorter option: its stated duration is about 1 hour and 15 minutes, while the circular walk takes roughly twice as long. Before setting off, check the latest trail conditions and route information.

Garden and Special Events

The “Garden of the Four Times” invites visitors to stroll across 55 ares behind an Alsatian house dating from 1731, among trees and perennials and beside a water feature. The garden is maintained in an environmentally responsible way, without chemicals or irrigation. If you would like to visit, check access arrangements in advance, as they may change.

At “Printemps des pelotes”, demonstrations and workshops on dyeing, knitting, carding, spinning, weaving and felting are held at the Maison Rurale de l’Outre-Forêt and in Kutzenhausen’s multi-purpose hall. Dates, participants and the programme may change. If this event is important to your travel plans, check the latest dates and programme in advance.
