Kertzfeld lies in the Grand Ried in the center of the Bas-Rhin département. If you are planning a stay, you can consider three aspects together: the landscape west of the village, archaeological and religious heritage in Kertzfeld, and the train connection to Strasbourg.

Landscape of the Bruch de l’Andlau

West of Kertzfeld, the Bruch de l’Andlau borders the village, with meadows, wooded areas and forest. The municipality covers 943 hectares, about one third of which is wooded. This woodland figure applies to the entire municipality, not just the Bruch. Thus, a named landscape area to the west and the classification of the municipal area as a whole can be considered side by side. When planning your trip, you can give the landscape its own focus alongside the village’s historical heritage. Converted, the municipality covers 9.43 square kilometers, around 3.14 square kilometers of which is forest. The conversion also makes the scale clear in square kilometers.

Archaeological finds and local history

In 1860, remains from the Bronze Age as well as the Gallo-Roman and Merovingian periods were discovered in Kertzfeld. Two sarcophagi from the Merovingian period have also been preserved. One is built into the base of the church tower, while the other is located beside the church. The discoveries therefore span several periods, while the two surviving sarcophagi are specifically attributed to the Merovingian period.

Another historical trace is the former Chapelle Saint-Wendelin. It stood near the village of Kertzfeld, not far from the road to Westhouse, at a place called «Die Binn», and no longer survives today. For several centuries, the chapel was one of the most visited pilgrimage sites in central Alsace. Its history links a precisely named location with its former religious significance.

Getting around and getting there

The Kertzfeld library is located in the village’s former presbytery. The playground is on Rue de l'Église, behind the town hall. In 2026, it is open all day, every day, from January 1 to December 31. If you plan to visit after this period, check the opening information in advance.

Strasbourg can be reached from Kertzfeld by train in less than 20 minutes. Check the current timetable before traveling. The train connection offers a different travel option from the village’s history and landscape: you can focus on Kertzfeld itself or include Strasbourg in your plans.

When choosing a hotel, it also helps to decide what role the village will play in your travel plans. If Kertzfeld itself is the focus, its landscape and local history can shape your plans. If you would also like to visit Strasbourg, take the train connection into account when deciding where to stay.
