Heiligenstein combines a distinctive wine tradition with hiking trails through a striking landscape. The village sits above the surrounding area, between vineyards and forest; the trails offer sweeping views over the Plaine d’Alsace. It is also home to the local Klevener speciality and historic buildings. You can shape your stay around the landscape, wine or history.

Klevener and local wine tradition

Heiligenstein is known for Klevener, a grape variety unique to Alsace and a local speciality. Alsace Klevener de Heiligenstein is a still wine. Eight winegrowers in the village offer Klevener. If you are planning to visit a producer, check in advance whether their offer is available.

Domaine Heywang offers one way to learn more about the wine: a guided cellar tour followed by a commented tasting of five wines, including Klevener de Heiligenstein. Check booking requirements and availability in advance. The grape variety’s history dates back to the 18th century, when it was introduced in Heiligenstein. According to local tradition, Mayor Ehret Wantz is said to have brought it from northern Italy.

Hiking trails with different time options

Six marked hiking trails in Heiligenstein have walking times ranging from one hour to two hours and 15 minutes. This lets you weigh shorter and longer routes against your planned hiking time. The trails offer sweeping views over the Plaine d’Alsace.

One specific point of comparison is the Sentier viticole de Heiligenstein – Le Klevener: the trail is 5.7 kilometres long, takes about one hour and 30 minutes, and is accessible to everyone. Its views extend across Alsace and the Forêt Noire in Germany. The estimated time can help you plan your day; check the route and conditions locally before setting out, as trail markings and conditions may change.

Fontaine de l’Ours and Château fort de Landsberg

The Fontaine de l’Ours is located on Rue Principale and is publicly owned. It bears the year 1558 and the coat of arms of Heiligenstein. Its octagonal basin surrounds a central pillar, topped by a column bearing a statue. The date, coat of arms and design make the fountain a tangible historic landmark in the village.

The Château fort de Landsberg also combines architectural history with a hiking option. The castle was built between 1197 and 1200; its remains were listed as a historic monument by decree dated 25 October 1965. A trail marked with a blue triangle leads there from Heiligenstein in about 45 minutes on foot. Check trail conditions before setting out.

There are several options for planning your stay: the Klevener tradition, with the possibility of a cellar visit; a hike that fits your available time; or historic buildings such as the fountain and castle. The trail times and walk to the Château fort de Landsberg make it possible to compare hiking times; by contrast, you should check wine offerings and tastings with the relevant producer in advance.
