Fegersheim brings together cultural offerings, a weekly market, natural features along the Ill and various traces of history. This gives you different ways to plan a stay: you can make an event the focus, plan a visit to the market, or explore the landscape and history of the town.

Culture in a historic setting

At the heart of Fegersheim, La CLEF is a public cultural institution housed in the restored historic building of the Auberge au Soleil d’Or. It offers year-round events and activities related to culture, reading and continuing education. These include read-aloud sessions, workshops, conferences and gatherings. Its program brings together a range of formats, from reading and learning together to exchanging ideas at an event.

Since 2021, the Caveau has worked with La CLEF. Regular public cultural events are held there, including concerts, theater performances, storytelling events, conferences and film screenings. Admission is free. If you would like to attend a particular event, check the date for your travel dates; the regular offerings do not specify a particular event day.

The Tuesday weekly market

The weekly market is held every Tuesday in the church square. Local producers sell fresh food there, including fruit and vegetable vendors, fishmongers, butchers and cheesemongers. The fixed day of the week is key to planning: if the market is of interest to you, your stay should include a Tuesday. The selection ranges from fruit and vegetables to fish, meat and cheese, offering a different focus from the cultural program.

The Ill and a distinctive connection with nature in the park

In Fegersheim, willows and wet woodlands line the Ill. Together, they form a floodplain ecosystem known as a riparian forest. The term describes the vegetation along the river as an interconnected habitat and draws attention to the relationship between the water, willows and wet woodlands.

Another connection with nature can be found in the park of the Chapelle Saint Ulrich: six beehives stand near the flowering meadows. Educational trails with information boards have also been created there. The beehives and boards are distinct features side by side: the former relate to bees, while the latter provide information along the educational trails.

Traces of history

In 1680, Fegersheim hosted the court of the Sun King for five days. A Jewish cemetery from the 19th century provides another historical point of interest. The Church of Saint-Amand in Ohnheim is also connected to the parish of Fegersheim; it was built between 1858 and 1872. These dates highlight different periods: the event of 1680, the 19th-century cemetery and the church’s multi-year construction period.

Goethe is another historical figure associated with the town: he often visited a former post inn in Fegersheim. Together with the court’s stay in 1680, this account offers a different perspective from the architectural dates. It draws attention to events and visits, while the cemetery and church refer to specific historic places or buildings.

Choose your travel dates based on your interests

When planning, you can distinguish between two types of dates: the market is held every Tuesday, while cultural events take place on their respective event dates. If you are looking for a hotel, this distinction can help you choose when to travel: would you like to include the weekly market, or plan your stay around a cultural event? Nature and history offer further themes to explore.
