Get to know Dettwiller through its cultural history, trails and weekly market. A stay here offers a range of options: a guided look at the collection at the Maison du Patrimoine, a marked hiking trail to Steinbourg, or a bike ride towards Saverne, Hochfelden or Brumath. The choices range from local history and named routes to the Sunday market.

Culture and local history

The Maison du Patrimoine et de la Chaussure is a cultural and heritage site in Dettwiller. More than 150 exhibits are on display at the Maison du Patrimoine; 80 of them are in working order and are regularly put into operation during guided tours. If you would like to see them in operation, check the visitor arrangements in advance. The Maison du Patrimoine became a museum after receiving numerous donations of machines and other objects.

Boucherie Will adds an architectural history perspective to the museum experience: its building was constructed in 1609 as a meeting hall, a place for all public gatherings. This brings two distinct historical perspectives together: the creation of a museum from donated objects and the former public function of a building.

Cycling and hiking trails

For cycling, the route from Dettwiller leads to Saverne in one direction and to Hochfelden or Brumath in the other. On foot, a hiking trail marked by the Club Vosgien starts on Rue de la Haute-Montée, passes through the Ried and ends in Steinbourg. The route information offers different kinds of guidance: the cycling route names destinations in both directions, while the hiking trail gives a specific starting point and destination. Before setting out, check the trail signage and maintenance locally; conditions on the cycling route may vary by season.

Ried and woodland landscape

In the Ried de la Zorn near Dettwiller, former river meanders are visible, including during dry periods in aerial photographs. This observation offers a landscape-history perspective alongside the route descriptions: it points to former river courses and how the landscape has changed.

A communal forest lies within the municipal territory of Eckartswiller, in the Northern Vosges Regional Nature Park. It covers 300 hectares and extends to the Moselle département border near Phalsbourg. Its woodland is approximately 50 percent deciduous, mainly beech and oak, and approximately 50 percent coniferous, including Douglas fir, spruce and fir. Check visitor access locally during the hunting season.

Sunday at the weekly market

Dettwiller’s weekly market takes place on Sunday mornings from 09:00 to 12:00 in the school courtyard, Cour de l’école, 37 Rue du Château. This gives you a fixed location and a three-hour time slot on Sunday morning for planning your visit. Products on offer include artisan goods, cheese, grilled dishes, fruit and vegetables, as well as Asian and Iberian specialities. Check the current schedule before your trip; individual vendors may change.
