In Betschdorf, pottery culture and nature go hand in hand with specific opportunities for activity. If you’d like to combine a cultural highlight with time outdoors, you’ll find a range of themes to consider when planning your trip: from the Musée de la Poterie to wet meadows and forest, as well as sports and hiking trails.

Pottery Culture at the Musée de la Poterie

The Musée de la Poterie has an extensive collection of salt-glazed stoneware in the gray-and-blue style typical of Betschdorf. A reconstructed pottery workshop complements the collection. This presents ceramics and a craftsman’s workspace as two distinct aspects of pottery culture. The museum is housed in a half-timbered building dating from the early 18th century, which also gives visitors a sense of historic building methods.

If you’d like to get to know Betschdorf primarily for its pottery, the museum offers a clear cultural focus. The collection, workshop and half-timbered building each offer a different point of interest: distinctive ceramics, their handmade production and the historic building. This combination makes the Musée de la Poterie a fitting stop for travelers interested in local pottery.

Wet Meadows and Forest

South of Betschdorf, wet meadows provide a food source for white storks, grey herons and snipes. The area’s connection to nature is evident not only in the forest but also in these open, wet habitats.

The forest of Betschdorf covers about 1,100 hectares. Several streams run through it and flow south into the Sauer. The forest is used for recreation, sport and birdwatching. The wet meadows and forest thus offer different nature experiences: on the one hand, a feeding ground for several bird species; on the other, a large woodland with streams and a range of recreational opportunities.

Trails and Activities

The Parcours de santé is a marked, 2,500-meter fitness trail on the edge of the forest in the direction of Soufflenheim. Its 20 exercise stations are suitable for different fitness levels. This facility combines a set route with exercise stations; its length and number of stations make it easy to assess as a sporting option in its own right.

A much longer option is the Sentier des potiers: an easy 33-kilometer route, with a stated duration of one to two days. Along the route, you can see pottery workshops in the villages of Betschdorf and Soufflenheim. This means you can encounter the pottery theme outside the museum, too. As route details may change, it’s a good idea to check them again before setting out.

Another activity is the Betschdorf pump track. The municipality opened it in May 2024. Its three interconnected tracks are designed for beginners, intermediate riders and experienced riders, and together extend for about 300 meters. The pump track can be used with scooters, bicycles, skateboards and roller skates. This makes it different both from a fitness trail with exercise stations and from a longer route.

The Parc du Bannholz is designed as an inclusive, accessible park open to all sections of the population. Its play equipment is intended for different age groups and abilities. It complements the sports routes with a facility that has a different focus: play and opportunities for people of different ages and abilities.

You therefore have several clearly distinct options when choosing activities: ceramics at the museum, nature in the wet meadows and forest, and exercise on a longer route, a fitness trail or the pump track. You can decide which one will shape your stay based on your interests and the time you have available.
