Balbronn combines a distinctive architectural history with a distillery, forests and named routes. The church, cemetery and synagogue represent clearly dated construction and preservation phases. Outdoors, you can choose between a hike with a stated duration and a cycling route; a tasting at the Hagmeyer distillery is also one of the visitor experiences.

Church and cemetery

The church and cemetery in Balbronn are listed as historic monuments. The decree of 10 September 1990 protects all remains, including the ground. The main construction phases of the complex date from the 12th, 13th and 15th centuries. This sequence indicates several construction phases rather than a single year of construction. The 1990 decree and the earlier construction phases refer to different historical dates, allowing the protection status and building history to be considered separately. Almost all of the fortified cemetery wall remains, except for the southeastern corner. The Protestant Vallée de la Mossig cultural route ends at the church on Rue Neuve.

The synagogue

The Balbronn synagogue was built in 1895 as a rectangular, Neo-Romanesque building with six window bays. The decree of 10 February 1999 protects its façades and roofs as historic monuments. The scope of the protection differs: for the church and cemetery, all remains, including the ground, are protected; for the synagogue, the decree explicitly covers the façades and roofs. The rectangular floor plan describes the building’s shape, the six window bays its façade layout, and the Neo-Romanesque style its architectural classification. Together, the church and cemetery complex and the synagogue represent different building forms and scopes of protection.

Elmerforst and hiking

The forests of Elmerforst cover 360 hectares and contain mainly oak and fir trees. The Auberge de l’Elmerforst is located within the municipality of Balbronn, four kilometres from the village and in the middle of a forest. These details separately specify its municipal connection, distance from the village and forest setting.

Hiking and cycling route

The Circuit du Loejele in Balbronn is a 15-kilometre hike lasting 4 hours and 30 minutes, with a moderate difficulty level. Its distance and duration give you an idea of its scope; the moderate rating provides additional information about the challenge. The Le Vignoble cycling route follows the D 225 to Balbronn. The two routes therefore differ in their modes of travel and planning details: one is a hike with a specified duration and difficulty, while the other is a cycling route that follows the D 225. Check the latest route information before setting out.

Visit the Hagmeyer distillery

The Hagmeyer distillery mainly processes fruit from its own harvest. Its shop in Balbronn welcomes visitors for tastings of eau-de-vie and liqueurs. A guided tour is a separate option: groups can take part by prior arrangement. If you are planning a tasting, check the visitor arrangements before you travel. This makes it possible to distinguish between visiting the shop for a tasting and taking a pre-arranged group tour.
