Jormua combines an exceptionally ancient geological connection with Finnish dance hall culture. The Jormua ophiolite is 1.95 billion years old; dance tradition and seasonal programs shape the cultural side of Jormuan lava. There is also a private nature reserve as a distinct connection to nature. When planning your trip, it is worth distinguishing enduring landscape and geological features from seasonal programs and skiing conditions.
Jormua and the geological history of the ophiolite
Jormua is considered the oldest known place in the world where a cross-section through deposits of an ancient seabed is still visible. This brings together two aspects of the geological history: the ophiolite’s specific age and the visible cross-section through the seabed deposits. The site is located on the border between the city of Kajaani and the municipality of Paltamo.
In the wider surrounding region, an area of dark plutonic and volcanic rocks extends for about 20 kilometers in length and 5 kilometers in width between Jormua in Kajaani and Leppikoski in Paltamo. The geological feature therefore extends beyond Jormua to the Leppikoski area. These measurements describe this larger area, not just a single point in Jormua.
Setti Eemeli’s Nature Reserve
Setti Eemeli’s Nature Reserve is a private nature reserve established in Jormua, Kajaani. It covers about 8.4 hectares. From the rock in the reserve, you can enjoy a view of Lake Oulujärvi. Alongside the ophiolite, this adds a specific landscape view and a clearly defined protected area to Jormua’s natural attractions.
Skiing and fitness trail
You can go skiing in Jormua. This option depends seasonally on snow and maintenance. Another sporting option is the illuminated Jormuan valaistu kuntorata fitness trail; conditions may vary. The two options involve different planning considerations: skiing depends on snow and maintenance, while the fitness trail depends on its current condition. Check the relevant conditions before your activity.
Dance tradition at Jormuan lava
Jormuan lava is one of the best-known dance halls in Kainuu. Dance halls are a traditional part of the Finnish summer, so the venue has cultural significance beyond individual event dates. Dance events were held here on Friday evenings in 2022. A Friday program was announced for summer 2026; additional Wednesday events were scheduled from July 1 to 29. If you are traveling for the dancing, please check the current dates, as the program may change.
