The Keihärinkoski rapids lie between Lakes Muuruejärvi and Ylä-Keitele. On the water route upstream from Kivijärvi to Keitele, they are the first rapids. The village and its surroundings can therefore be explored through both their location by the water and their natural and historical traces.

Water Route and Rapids

The rapids are wide and shallow. Another way to orient yourself is the rapids route from Kivijärvi to Keitele, which passes through the village of Keihärinkoski. The waterscape and the village thus offer different ways of experiencing the area, without requiring a set itinerary.

In autumn 2020, the lower section of the rapids was restored to a more natural state. The work was intended to improve habitats and breeding opportunities for fish and other organisms in flowing waters. This adds a specific ecological dimension to the waterway’s landscape significance.

Fishing and Activities by the Water

The rapids are suitable for fishing for trout and grayling. Only traditional fly fishing is permitted there. Check the current permit conditions before fishing, as they may change. There is a fishing harbour on Luotolansaari near Keihärinkoski. Erkin kala ja matkailu offers services for anglers and boaters in Keihärinkoski.

There are also various things to do by the water and in the village besides fishing. Keihärinkoski has beaches, and there is a beach volleyball court near the kiosk. The area around the rapids offers opportunities for nature outings and photography. If you are planning an outing, check the trail conditions locally.

Views and Nature

The newly built Täivuori observation tower stands in the village. From there, you can enjoy views of water and forest in every direction. The viewpoint offers a different perspective from the rapids themselves: here, forest and water share the view, while the broad, shallow form of the waterway and its place along the water route shape the landscape there.

The surrounding area also offers opportunities for skiing. If you want to explore Keihärinkoski’s natural surroundings, you can consider this winter activity alongside nature outings and photography opportunities around the rapids.

Local History and Accommodation

Historically, Keihärinkoski lay along an old trade route and had good water connections. The village is also home to several so-called Lapinrauniot, or stone burial structures. Evidence of settlement dating back more than 5,000 years adds to these historical associations. Together, they offer different ways to explore the area’s past: through trade and water connections, as well as stone remains and traces of early settlement.

Visitors can stay overnight at Keihärinkosken koskitupa by the rapids. In addition to rental cabins, there is also a cooking hut. If you are planning to stay here, check availability before your trip.
