Rutalahti by the Rutajoki offers different natural scenery in each season: striking rapids in summer and impressive ice formations in winter. The village lies at the end of a long, narrow bay of Lake Päijänne and is surrounded by rugged hills. The river, lake and ridges form the setting for a stay that can focus on nature or culture. In 2000, the Rutajoki was described as one of the most significant habitats for flowing-water fish fauna in northern and central Päijänne; fly fishers were already using it at the time.

Trails through river and rapids landscapes

The Koskikaran kierros nature trail runs along the banks of the Rutajoki. The circular trail starts in the centre of Rutalahti and passes through river and rapids landscapes. It is part of the Leivonmäki National Park trail network; Rutalahti is right next to the national park. The Korvenkoski rapids are at the start of the Koskikaran circular trail. From the cycling route, it is only a few dozen metres on foot to the rapids. This is a practical landmark if you want to make Korvenkoski a stop of its own. Trail conditions may vary by season; check them before setting out.

Cultural history and village life

Rutalahti also has the cultural history trail “Ei täällä kehnosti eletty” (We didn’t live badly here), with information boards. It can be explored on foot or by car, and the boards are easy to access. While Koskikaran kierros passes through river and rapids landscapes, this trail focuses on Rutalahti’s cultural history. Leijona Family Park is along the route in Rutalahti.

The culturally and historically significant Suojarinne association hall is currently used mainly for meetings and is rented to individuals and communities for celebrations and events. If you are considering renting it, check availability in advance, as rental options may change. Letkaliiteri is a dance venue in Rutalahti; as well as dance evenings, it hosts various other events. If a particular date matters for your trip, check the event schedule in advance.

Rutalahti’s atmospheric farmers’ markets traditionally mark the end of the summer and autumn market season in Joutsa in late September. The exact market dates and vendors change each year. If you are planning to visit the markets, check the dates for your travel period.

Swimming and getting around

You can swim at Kyläranta in Rutalahti. Seasonal swimming opportunities may vary; take this into account when planning and check before your visit. For getting around, road 6134, also known as Koskelantie, provides access to the southern part of the village area. It is a useful landmark for travelling to Rutalahti. Rutalahti has a guest harbour at the end of the Päijänne bay.
