In Oulunsalo, distinctive landscapes and cultural history come together: Akionlahti is a bay almost cut off from the sea, while the church, local history museum and old sawmill buildings in Varjakka offer different historical perspectives. Seasonal nature activities add to the appeal, from the nature trail on Akionsaari to the ski trails in Kisakangas. When planning your trip, it is worth organising these places and themes according to the seasons and your interests.

Akionlahti and Varjakka

Akionlahti is a sea bay almost cut off from the sea, estimated to have formed around 400 years ago. The Akionlahti nature reserve in Varjakka covers about 263 hectares. Established in 2006, it is part of the Natura 2000 programme. The shape of the bay and its protected status are therefore central to understanding the landscape of Oulunsalo.

Varjakka also brings together different features: it has a guest marina and an unofficial swimming spot. The old buildings from the sawmill era are part of the built cultural heritage. The swimming spot is unofficial; the guest marina and the buildings are separate places to visit. In Varjakka, you can thus explore its coastal connections and architectural history as distinct aspects of the area.

Nature Trail on Akionsaari

A nature trail runs around Akionsaari. There is a birdwatching tower on the southern shore and a shelter and campfire site on the northern shore. On the mainland, the trail continues to a protected landmark pine and the Warjakka Art Trail. Along the way, there are several specific points of reference: the loop around the island, the tower on the southern shore and the destinations reached as the trail continues on the mainland.

Work is underway to improve the route. Check trail conditions and the state of the facilities before your visit. This is especially useful if you plan to visit the nature trail, birdwatching tower, shelter or campfire site.

Church, Museum and Festival History

Oulunsalo Church was built from 1888 to 1891 to designs by J. F. Basilier and is protected under the Church Act. In the cemetery beside the church, there is a monument to the votive church built in 1665. The two dates mark distinct building histories in the same churchyard: the 17th-century votive church and the present-day church from the late 19th century.

The Oulunsalo Local History Museum explores local life in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The objects on display include tools and items used on farms. The old sawmill-era buildings in Varjakka, part of the built cultural heritage, offer another perspective on local history.

Oulunsalo Soi was founded by the municipality of Oulunsalo in 1998. From the outset, the festival has been conceived as an ambitious, cross-disciplinary chamber music festival. Alongside traditional concerts, the programme has included dance, spoken word, rhythm and children's music, as well as visual arts, jazz and folk music. Every year, Oulunsalo Soi selects an Artist of the Year; their exhibition is on view at the Oulunsalo Library in August and September. Check the specific event dates before travelling to an exhibition.

Ski Trails and Practical Planning

Kisakangas Ski Centre has ski trails of 3, 5 and 10 kilometres; the 5-kilometre trail is illuminated. There is also a 12-kilometre trail around the airport. The ski centre also has a ski hut and a campfire site. When planning, distinguish between the trails in Kisakangas and the longer loop around the airport. Ski trail facilities are seasonal, so check conditions before making specific plans.

Buses 8 and 9 run from Oulu Airport. As bus routes may change, check the current timetable before travelling. This helps you coordinate your journey and choose between cultural sites, landscape attractions and seasonal activities to suit your plans.
